I agree with you. Children must be taught responsibilities. The best experience they get when working hard is what you've just mentioned, character, discipline, and life experience. Children when they start working young, learn the value of money, learn how to associate with people, responsibilities, and the purpose of life.

Currently, the millennials think that they must be provided by the government. The welfare system. They demand without knowing where the government gets its fund given to them. This is how the liberals feed the mentality of these youths in colleges and universities.

The way to socialism, where people's ability and wisdom are not utilized, but dependency until the government is bankrupt. Then the people riot, and fight. Then they run away and come to the US to free load. The democrats like them because they use them to cast fraudulent votes. And later on as soon as the democrats takes control, they provide citizenship so that these millions of illegals will vote for them as soon as they are given the citizenship. I believe Immigration Services has a quota system with cut off dates. So the U.S. producer has to have his numbers in by a certain date. After that, there are strict requirements to be met by the immigrants themselves in order to qualify. Long and short, there is a ton of Red Tape. In today's climate of open borders and protections essentially guaranteed by the Democrat Party (laws? We don't need no stinking laws!) its easier to take the risk of being caught. Who's going to do anything about it? And for the workers it's a win-win; they make cash money, pay no tax, send it to Mexico ... If they get deported so what? They had no intention of staying anyway. If we would streamline our immigration laws, get our own bureaucracy out of the way, this would become less of an issue. So, that said and the fact that the legal immigrant workers and their unions despise these people and don't want them here;

None of the foregoing addresses the core issue as couched by Peter S; that being the fallacy that there are no Americans to do this work. 50% of Mexicans attempt to live on less than $5/day. Another 30% on less than $15/day. The Mexican governing environment is so corrupt that these people have no hope of a better life. If you make too much anti-government noise in Mexico you and possibly your family will cease to exist. I don't blame them for wanting to come here. And we encourage them. They are fully aware that the gringo will not do this work because the gringo does not have to do this work; the gringo's government will take care of him allowing him to sit at home on his ass doing nothing, collecting income, rather than working for a paltry $7/hour.

Think about it this way; if Mexico becomes a prosperous country and these people have no need to come here ... who will do this work? You think it will get done or, will we simply quit eating?

Interestingly if you look at the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics) current data on the Labor Participation Rate you will note the the leading group in returning to the work force, in significant numbers, is people with no education or only high school. Labor … There are thousands of jobs (like harvesting sweet potato's for example) and no one to fill them. 24 year old millennial's with degrees in Ancient Language Arts or Philosophy and $100,000 student loan debt are sitting at home unable to find work worthy of their attention.

Gee, there you go. There are no Americans to do this work then … So I suppose if we close down the Mexican pipeline … we will just have to stop eating!

As for future voters, Leftist are patient. It's a long process to control all human activity. Think of the thousands of new 'Americans' that these illegals (not just migrant workers but all the illegals the Democrats are sheltering) will produce if we can just keep them here long enough to procreate.
