NATIONAL VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY â March 29
National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served and sacrificed during the longest conflict in United States history.
It was on March 29, 1973, when combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam. Generations later, Veterans of this time period are gaining the respect that was not so freely given upon their return. Involving five U.S. presidents, crossing nearly two decades and 500,000 U.S.military personnel, it left an indelible mark on the American psyche.
Returning Veterans did not always receive respectful welcomes upon their arrive on American soil. There were 58,000 killed, never to return. National Vietnam War Veterans Day recognize the military service of these men and women who answered the call to service their country when she needed them. They didnât make the decisions to go to war.
On National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we recognize the service and duty rendered by all servicemen and women of this era.

For those that may not know, there is also a "moving" wall. It's a smaller, but complete replica of the wall in DC. I was 17 in 1973 so I didn't serve during any wartime. But a friend did and asked me to go with him to downtown Cleveland to see that moving wall. I haven't had a similar experience before or since. The atmosphere was amazing. Vet's everywhere asking other vets if they need a hand, many we talked to had experiences to share with my friend, asked me if I served, of course I hadn't at that point then thanked me for supporting them. Very humbling indeed. The most amazing thing was on display in an exhibit hall were citations for Purple Heart, Medal of Honor and other awards many awarded posthumously. The citations described the circumstances leading up to the various medals. You can't imagine how many examples of ultimate courage and self sacrifice there were. And they are almost unbelievable. Viet Nam was a horrible period in our history for many reasons. Our Viet Nam vets are a special kind of person.
I have had the humbling experience of seeing the Traveling Wall.
I have not seen, and never will go to see that wall,Too many of my friends and acquantinences, are enshrined there.

May GOD bless and protect those 'Nam 'veterans
it was a bad war
but the young men who were sent there were not bad
many gave their very lives
others gave parts of their bodies
then when they returned home they were ostracized and cursed and called 'child killers'
I was,and am still ashamed of our country for the way they were treated
