Isaiah chapter 37

Forward

This chapter is so important that it is the only chapter that is the same in two books. The 37th chapter of Isaiah matches 2 Kings the 19th chapter. In both, one angel kills the entire Assyrian army of 185,000 in 1 night. After this, Assyria just disappears from being a powerful country.

Verse 1 - 3

The government and the church are on the same page. They send notice to Isaiah. Hezekiah asks for God’s help because he knows Jerusalem can’t do battle with the Assyrian army.

Verse 4 & 5

Rabshakeh in his overconfidence has blasphemed God when he likened Him to the gods of other nations. God heard this. It is stupid to piss off God. He can have you see what ain’t there, believe what ain’t true, not see what is there, and doubt what makes sense. Reading 2 Kings, the 6th chapter shows us our ability to perceive reality is in the hands of the supernatural.

Verse 6 & 7

Assyria becomes distracted from attacking Jerusalem. When promises of a bad future are made by the enemy, God will give a calm reassurance. Sennacherib would go back home, but he would go home alone after his army of 185,000 had been killed.

Verse 8 - 13

Rabshakeh has crossed the line, He doesn’t want the Judeans to believe in the promises of God. Even though he can see attacking Jerusalem is becoming a problem. To him, there is no difference between the God of Jacob and the gods of other nations of conquered territories.

Verse 14 - 20

This is Hezekiah’s prayer to God. The gods of other nations were manmade of rocks, sticks, stone, and glass. God made us and is in control.

Verse 21 & 22

God’s prophets should speak what God has spoken. Often when the bible speaks of females, it is referring to religion. If you don’t like God, He don’t like you. The Assyrians see no difference between idols and the real God. Apparently Sennaracherib didn’t care abut his own army. When he finds his army is dead, he just goes home.. He later gets killed by his own children.

Verse 23 - 26

God asks Sennacherib who he thinks he is talking to? He and his servants have started a fight they can’t win. The past doesn’t dictate the future. You can’t drive forward with all your attention on the rear view mirror. Just because you win one game, doesn’t mean you will win the next.

Verse 27 - 29

The armies defeated by Assyria weren’t that strong. God can read your mind. When any person thinks they can defeat God, it makes Him laugh. No Assyrian will set a foot in Jerusalem.

Verse 30 - 32

Assyria has surrounded Jerusalem. God wants Judea to know He is protecting them. They can plan for the future. We should develop as Christians. The sins committed at 20 should not trouble us at 50.

Verse 33 - 38

God destroyed the Assyrian army of 185,000 in one night. Sennacherib just goes home. Apparently he didn’t learn anything as his children kill him while he is worshipping an idol.

I think you might enjoy this man. His name is Ken Johnson and he has first hand knowledge of the Dead Sea Scrolls and has written @ 28 books on what he has found. Other than the books of the Bible there is much additional info we lay people haven't heard. I ordered a package deal from Prophecy in the News and I'm half way through the first one and it's awesome. Personal testaments from the patriarchs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA9AEEoBebE
