Utah’s Mia Love, the only Haitian-American in Congress, says Trump should apologize for his ‘s---hole’ comment
By Thomas Burr, Salt Lake City Tribune
Washington • Rep. Mia Love, a Utah Republican and the only Haitian-American in Congress, called on President Donald Trump to apologize Thursday after reports said he questioned why the United States was allowing immigrants from “s---hole countries” like Haiti, El Salvador and African nations.
“The president's comments are unkind, divisive, elitist, and fly in the face of our nation’s values,” Love said in a statement, noting that her parents, Mary and Jean Maxime Bourdeau, emigrated from Haiti and made their home in America. “This behavior is unacceptable from the leader of our nation.”
Her parents, she said, took an oath to their adopted country and “took on the responsibilities of everything that being a citizen comes with.”
“They never took a thing from our federal government,” she added. “They worked hard, paid taxes, and rose from nothing to take care of and provide opportunities for their children. They taught their children to do the same. That’s the American Dream. The president must apologize to both the American people and the nations he so wantonly maligned.”
Love talked to the media at Salt Lake International Airport on Thursday night after getting off a plane.
“I doubt that a comment like that would have been made if somebody like me is sitting across the table from him,” Love told KUTV-Channel 2.
Trump made his comments to lawmakers during an Oval Office meeting Thursday in a discussion of restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries, according to The Washington Post and The Associated Press.
“Why are we having all these people from s---hole countries come here?” Trump reportedly said, adding that he’d rather have more people from places like Norway, the prime minister of which Trump talked to earlier Thursday.
The White House did not challenge the quote.
Love said she doesn’t want Trump’s comments to detract from work on immigration policy.
“At the end of the day, that’s the biggest issue,” she told the news station. “We need to make sure that we’re not derailed from what we’re trying to do in fixing immigration reform.”
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, meanwhile, said he would like a “more detailed explanation” of Trump’s comments.
“Part of what makes America so special is that we welcome the best and brightest in the world, regardless of their country of origin,” Hatch said in a statement.
Rep. John Curtis, the newest member of Utah’s all-Republican congressional delegation, said in a Facebook post that he was “dismayed” by Trump’s comment.

Since this crap surfaced I have seen too many people of the press mentioning the fact that Obama said horseshit many times. I don't want to get involved in whether Trump did or didn't but just have to wonder why we didn't ever see anything about Obama using that word. I am thinking that there is a good reason why we didn't see it in WAPO, but maybe I am wrong.
Were you paying attention about 2003 when Durbin got wound out trying to defend the residents of Gitmo and calling for closing it down? I remember a man from the Dallas-Ft. Worth forum talking about having been involved in the construction of that place. Of course, it was built after Bush took office since Clinton wasn't around when it was built. I do remember many of Durbin's words about why it should have been closed and all of them seemed to be partisan lies and other crap. I joined in with conservatives who called him Turban Durbin especially before all kinds of Congress people started going down there to inspect the place to see if those prisoners really were collecting their bodily waste and throwing it at the guards. I was unable to think that I wouldn't have shot one of them for doling that to me and I had always thought I would never do anything like that. I would have been happy to club old Turban if I had been around him.
Back in those days the way he talked to the Senator who headed the Senate committee that was over Gitmo, my Senator the things he would say always pissed me off. Durbin is one of the most partisan members of the Senate but then he will stay as long as he wants because Dems are in control of Illinois and he is one of them.
Didn't I read somewhere in this thread about the weekly changes in what the left was using against Trump? And wasn't this one of them? I consider this topic to be a member of the racist crap coming out of our Congressional mouths. Yep, I consider racism to be from both sides and do have to wonder what would happen if Durbin and the writers you included to make Turban look good to be a real part of that reverse racism. I really respect Mia Love but one has to wonder just how much racial thought is included in what she says.
I don't give a damn about Senator Perdue but sure do respect and like Cotton. I don't like those who said these men should resign because of the part they took in this whole thing, especially Cotton.
I was surprised to see your name as the poster in this thread but like Archie I was willing to accept it although I didn't like the source of the article. Stay in there because those of us who know you appreciate what you say.
