When speaking of the power source of government specifically, “The United States of America is a Republic,” where elected officials vote for laws, not a Direct Democracy, where citizens vote for laws directly..

I was just talking with a friend yesterday about technology. Younger people are often more technology adept, but they have no alternative means of operation. It's a little scary actually. There was The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics but and The republic of Iraq under Saddam Hussein I don't think either would qualify as democratic so one doesn;t mean the other.
There was the old joke of a Soviet citizen & an American arguing about whose sytem was better. The American said to the Soviet, "Why do you realize that I can stand outside The White House and shout out, "The American president is a jackass without fear of reprisal?" The soviet citizen replies, "That's nothing. I too can stand outside the Kremlin and shout out, "The American president is a jackass without fear of reprisal."
