SO, YOU STILL BELIEVE YOU LIVE IN A FREE AMERICA? It's only going to get worse folks!!
Another sign of how America’s Christian foundation has been eroding can be seen in the way Christians have been losing their First Amendment rights while Muslims have had their First Amendment rights protected by the courts.
We’ve all heard about the cases of Christian business owners who were ordered by the courts that they had to violate their faith. One of the classic cases involved Aaron and Melissa Klein who owned Sweet Cakes by Melissa in Gresham, Oregon. The Kleins are devout Christians and when a lesbian couple asked them to make their wedding cake for them, the Klein’s turned down the request because of their Christian faith.
Instead of being as tolerant as they want others to be, the lesbians ran crying to the state and filed a discriminatory lawsuit against them. Once the lawsuit had been filed and made public, homosexuals from all over the area, state and nation began a campaign of harassment against the Kleins for being so intolerant.
The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries ruled that Aaron and Melissa Klein were guilty of discrimination against the lesbian couple and that they will have to pay the couple up to $150,000 in restitution. In their decision, the bureau stated that although religious institutions can be protected by an exemption, the exemption do not cover private businesses.
Melissa loved her bakery and being part of special occasions in the lives of others, but her Christian faith was more important than her business. Consequently, the Kleins made the hardest decision of their lives and closed their bakery. They said they weren’t forced to close the doors but it was their decision so that they would not be placed in the same situation again, however, they are taking orders online.
Then there is the case of Jack Phillips, owner of masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colorado. Phillips is also a strong Christian. In 2012, he was approached by a gay couple who asked him to design and make a cake for their same-sex marriage. Phillips explained that his Christian faith would not allow him to design a cake for a same-sex wedding, but he did offer to sell them any of his other premade cakes or other products.
The gay couple filed a lawsuit which they won against Phillips. The case, with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, has been appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court. The high court has agreed to hear the appeal, giving hope to Christian business owners.
Most of the courts in America have ruled against Christians, whether they own a business or in other areas of life. Yet, the same courts readily defend the religious rights of Muslims.
I worked for a utility years ago when an edict was passed down to all employees ordering them to remove all signs of religious faith. It specified that no employee was allowed to wear cross necklaces or earrings, no Bibles were allowed on work locations and no religious signs, sayings or picture frames. However, Sikh and Muslim employees were allowed to wear their religious clothing. Everyone I knew said that the edict was specifically targeting Christians. A Christian woman refused to take off her cross necklace saying it was a gift from her then dead mother when she became a Christian and that she had never taken it off. She was eventually terminated and lost her case of wrongful termination.
In 2009, two Muslim truck drivers refused to haul a load of alcohol, stating that it was against their religious beliefs. The drivers were fired from their job and filed a lawsuit. In 2015, the pair were awarded $240,000 by an Illinois judge who ruled that their termination violated the religious belief. The judge said it was a clear case of religious discrimination.
In the latest example of Muslim rights being defended, is the case of Kristy Powell, a Muslim woman who was ordered by California police to remove her hijab – head scarf – after being arrested. She claims that she asked to be processed by a female officer, but that request was refused. She was jailed overnight, without her head scarf. She wasn’t stripped or anything else, just ordered to remove her head scarf. It was just announced that the Long Beach City Council who agreed to settle the claim by paying Powell $85,000.
Public schools are not allowed to hold any kind of ceremony or meeting that has anything to do with Christianity, like a Christmas pageant or baccalaureate service for graduating seniors, but it’s okay to hold a girls only prom for Muslim girls.
Christians are forced to remove their religious items and they are forced to violate their religion at the request of any LGBT person or activist. However, Muslims don’t have to comply to the same rules. Their rights are protected. This has been a standard part of Liberal Democrats’ war on Christianity.
Hopefully, the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Jack Phillips and protect the rights of Christians.
