Loved it. We had horses when I was growing up, dad would always let me drive when we were pulling an in-line trailer because I could back it up better than him. He hated doing things he didn't do well, and I loved being able to do some things better than him. Or was the old man just teaching me another task in a long list of lessons.

I like, as a dad myself, to believe the latter explanation. It's good to instill confidence in your children.

Well, he did a real good job then because I have loads of confidence. He worked as a fireman, 24 on 48 off... as he was leaving for work he would smilingly give me some special chores to do. One I remember very well. Bub, the septic tank guy will be here tomorrow and I need a hole dug 8x8 and 10 foot deep. No backhoe, just a shovel. It was done by the time he got back home. No gloves, back then I had calluses on my calluses.

He wasn't perfect, who is, but he was awesome. Once had me dig about 50 post holes for a fence. He had a friend that could get him old telephone poles which we would cut to about 10 foot lengths, after a whole day or was it two, the holes, two foot deep, were dug, the poles cut, installed and aligned and tamped into place. Job well done. Then he told me they would look better if they were two feet further in from the property line. I thought a lot of things but all I said was yes sir and got er done again. He worked me hard no doubt, but being able to whip my bully older brother at age 16 made it all worth it, ha.
