A camel through the eye of a needle
In the synoptic gospels a rich man encounters Jesus. The accounts are in Matthew 19:16 - 22, Mark 10:17 - 22, and Luke 18:18 - 23. After all accounts Jesus says, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.“ In Jesus time, Jerusalem was surrounded by walls. In the walls were two gates. A large gate for daytime traffic, and a smaller gate for night time traffic, called a needle gate. The needle gate was small enough for a man to walk through. A loaded camel could get through the gate, but it had to unload it’s burdens and get on it’s knees. It was a time consuming and tedious process. We have to deny ourselves and follow Christ. This is easier to do if you have little.
