""Photos taken 70 years ago show massive crowds of Parisians filling the Champs Elysees to celebrate the Nazi surrender, after nearly five years of occupation. May 8 is now a public holiday in France, but relatively few people turned out on the Champs Elysees Friday for the official ceremony.""

Thus we forget.

It was a war close to their homeland, their Fatherland, a war for their very existence, and hard fought by spirited people. How could they forget?

Wine, women and song? Sex, drugs and rock and roll??

I sometimes worry for the French. But then, I look around and get a real slap in the face.

I thought you were talking about Russia.

From V. Putin:
“This horrific tragedy could not be prevented, first and foremost, because of the connivance of the criminal ideology of racial superiority, because of the disunity of the world’s leading countries. This allowed the Nazis to appropriate themselves the right to decide the fate of other peoples, to unleash the most brutal, bloody war, to enslave almost all European countries, putting them at the service of their deadly targets,” the Russian leader said, speaking during the military parade in Moscow marking the 72nd anniversary of the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945.

I thought you were talking about Russia. br br Fr... (show quote)

And I thought you were referring to the French with your question, "how could they forget?" It applies in both cases. With the Russians, how could they forget, and they didn't. For the French, how could they forget, and yet, the crowds become smaller and smaller. It becomes a day off work for them, nothing more meaningful. As for the average US citizen, they've forgotten everything.

What did Kipling write?

"Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet;
Lest we forget; lest we forget."

"Recessional":

"The tumult and the shouting dies,
The Captains and the Kings depart".

Thought I should post the whole poem. Very meaningful for today:

"Recessional
BY RUDYARD KIPLING
1897
God of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle-line,
Beneath whose awful Hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard,
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard,
For frantic boast and foolish word—
Thy mercy on Thy People, Lord!"

Perhaps the French should take heed.

And off they go, time to fish.

I enjoy Kipling's style of poem. Did you ever see a movie called Breaker Morrant?

No, but I do like Kipling. One story of his especially: "The Light That Failed".

Anyway, take it seriously, nwtk. The Russians remembered, the Americans didn't. "Judge of the Nations, spare us yet---"
