Get ready to pay for the West Virginia Chemical Spill

Freedom Industries filed for bankruptcy on January 16, 2014. This was less than a week after the toxic spill threw the lives of hundreds of thousands of people into chaos.

Under US bankruptcy laws, the company could reorganize and continue to do business, after passing the burden of the cost of this chemical spill onto the public.

The company has not paid taxes since the year 2000.

Isn't that nice of Freedom to stick the taxpayers with the bill due to their failure and the state of WV failure to over see their operation in the proper fashion? Apparently regular inspections don't exist in that backasswards state.

Less regulation anyone?

Once again we have the issue of privatizing the profits while socializing the losses...Mighty nice way to do business if you can get by with it....Eh?

Interesting chemical cocktail they have there, lots of fun carbon molecules. Unfortunately we would be stuck paying for it either way. Wether indirectly through higher insurance premiums or directly out of empty fed gov pockets.

Where were the people who we pay so much to protect us from inappropriate or insufficient corp safety procedures. I work hard everyday assisting companies with being in compliance with OSHA an EPA regulations. Particularly when it comes to toxic spill containment.

There should be an investigation into why the fed gov failed to properly hold this company accountable.

Retired669-isn't that exactly what Obamacare does? Insurance companies keep the profits but taxpayers cover their losses. Where was the great EPA ? The problem starts in Washington, D.C. not West Virginia.
What taxes were not paid-income taxes-property taxes ? Who licensed the company ? Whatever the cleanup cost it will pale in comparison to what was lost with failed green energy programs. West Virginia's economy revolved around the coal industry which was shut down by the all knowing government and their global warming fantasy. Those people are struggling to survive and all you can do is cast aspersions. By the way there aren't any utopian states and yours may be in worst shape than West Virginia. Good Luck America !!!

I heard a voice ask where is the EPA in all of this? Oh thats right they have no head. As in almost all of our presidents attempts to appoint anyone. The right wants to take their ball and go home instead of doing their jobs. Hell given there druthers all those pesky filthy regulations would be gone.. Bring back the good ole days of disgusting water ways and unlabeled superfund sites who cares as long as the top 5 can make a killing and crush the lil pauper..
Oh yea thats right most of the production jobs were moved over seas and the corporations given subsidies to do so.. And oh yea it happened just recently in the early mid 2000s
yes a lot of it was already happening the tax dollars given out in the early otts was a thing of right wing beauty..
gotta love some good old fashioned ideals

The feds can't police every part of this country since the righties doesn't want the government involved in private business much less pay to have new regulations inspected on a regular basis. This recent disaster is the fault of local government first then the state. I read where this place hadn't been inspected in years which should be a crime considering the type of business that was being ran right next to a water way that provided water for thousands of people.. The state of WV shouldn't have let these people go without being inspected for so long. Someone should get their ass fired for not doing their job.

The state or states your working in probably care about EPA regulations that help keep its people safe and it's obvious WV didn't care. The trade I retired from (Fire Protection) I covered 4 states doing inspections for a number of years. Some of the violations I seen would blow your mind since we were dealing with property and peoples lives. Some local jurisdictions don't care and many state governments don't care either since fixing these issues would cost businesses money. If the insurance companies are made aware of violations they will generally require a business to fix issues quickly and if they don't they will charge them a higher rate until they do. That is one of the few good things I've seen insurance companies do that benefits everyone. I did many inspections where I had a insurance guy go with me during inspections so I could show him what needed to be taken care of now.

The EPA and OHSA are fed agencies and I have seen them sticking their noses into the smallest holes. But I have noticed fire marshals being as difficult to get to sign off on safety as anyone. I'm not saying this is a bad thing only an observation.

I use to work for a company that had hundreds of outlets and my responsibility was to go in and make underachieving locations into real profit centers. I was very good at what I did and the number one thing I would do was to teach them how to follow safety policy and procedures. It saves money not cost money to make a safe working environment.

retired669-agree that there should be accountability and someone needs to be fired. How about the IRS scandal, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, should someone be held accountable and fired ? Good Luck America !!!
