As a bag piper I play many gigs.
Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man.He had no family or friends so the service was to be at a paupers cemetary in the Nova Scotia back country.
As I was not familiar with the territory I got lost and being a typical man,I didn't stop and ask for directions. Finally arriving an hour late I noticed that the preacher presiding had already keft and the hearse was also gone. There were only the diggers left and they were eating their lunch.I apologized to them for being late, went to the grave and saw that the vault lid was already in place. Not knowing what else to do I started playing the pipes.
The workers gathered round and I played my heart out for this poor homeless man with no family or friends.I played like I had never played before, with all my heart and soul.
And as I played "Amazing grace"the workers began to weep.
They wept ,I wept,we wept together. Then when I had finished I packed up the pipes and went to my car, though my head was low ,my heart was full.
As I opened the car door I heard one of the workers exclaim
"I AINT NEVER SEEN NOTHIN LIKE THAT BEFORE,AND I'VE BEEN PUTTING IN SEPTIC TANKS FOR TWENTY YEARS.
apparently I'm still lost
Time is like a river
you cant touch the water twice
the water that has passed will never pass again
enjoy the river of your life
you only have the once
