I suspect the explosives were installed during the time when workers were allowed into all maintenance areas of the towers.
Asbestos had been widely used in the twin towers and it's removal cost was said to be astronomical. Why not blow up the towers and collect insurance? Money could be made instead of spent by this method.
There was also the added advantage of blaming it on Muslims to enable an unending war on Muslims.

It is difficult to comprehend the overwhelming power of hatred. How hate can purge the human mind of all reason and rational thought.
Without actually researching, I'd wager that the Holocaust is the most thoroughly documented mass atrocity in human history. There are literally thousands upon thousands of writings, letters, journals, memos, books, photos, film and other literature from both the Nazi Einsatzgruppen, SS officers and soldiers ( Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust) and Jewish survivors.
In addition (as another poster noted, the Nazis were obsessed, even anal, about record keeping) the official Nazi documentation and records recovered and archived by the allied liberators would fill the Library of Congress two times over.
There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of testimonials, statements, photos and film footage provided by American, British, and Russian officers and soldiers who overran and/or liberated the extermination camps.
Then there are the memorials, artifacts, remains, preserved camps and sites both in the actual locations where the atrocities occurred and in Holocaust museums in Western Russia, Europe, Israel, and the USA.
