Today, In 1861, Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter, the official beginning of the Civil War. Coincidentally, today is also the anniversary of the so-called "Ft Pillow Massacre" in 1864.

Today in 1961, Yuri Gargarin became the first man in space.
In another coincidence, today in 1981, 20 years later, was the launching of the Space Shuttle.
Today in 1945, President FDR died in office.
Today in 1633, Galileo was convicted of heresy for daring to say that the Earth revolved around the Sun, rather than vice-versa.
