How is it "over regulation" to require an ISP to ask before selling information about their customers?
I am in the medical field and personal information is PERSONAL and PRIVATE. Sharing information with anyone is RESTRICTED under severe penalties of law unless it is shared with other health care providers solely for the medical treatment of the customer (or patient if you prefer). That's the only decent standard in my view.
To make an apt analogy to the ISPs, in healthcare how acceptable would it be to find that a diabetes diagnosis leads to tons of advertising about blood sugar monitoring, various pharmaceuticals, nutrition, and exercise programs and equipment?
Answer: Not even ONCE!
Also, in the case of ISP's, these are most often monopoly situations. One could argue that it's "leveling the playing field" with Facebook and Google but I don't pay for them and it is my choice to use them or not. I don't believe that Charter/Spectrum in my area needs any help such as "leveling the playing field" with Facebook and Google.

Before simply asserting that anything government does or that anything that occurred during the Obama administration is bad or suspect we should follow the money and ask who benefits. When the newly Republican dominated Congress removes Obama directives check whether it benefits corporations, and their shareholders, or the little people like me and maybe you who are paying the bills.

Athena-the ISP agreement which we all sign or agree to allows them to share our information. Does it really matter
whether they sell it or give it away ? In either case the information is shared with someone other that the ISP. I would prefer that personal information not be share but then I would not have any ISP would I ? America First !!!

Only health information is protected, not identities. HIPPA law even specifically says so.

Exactly...and the health information is meaningless unless it's attached to an identity (just like your browsing history, purchases, friends, income and debt, demographic information AND You!)

What on Earth does the "America First!!!" exclamation have to do with the ISP that I am already paying also profiting even more by selling my personal information? If you want to go into that America First Patriotic stuff well alright. The U.S. Constitution guarantees a right to privacy that applies to my internet use, personal information, income, friends, etc., etc., etc.

If the ISP is going to make even more money off me by selling me off then perhaps they should be upfront about it and offer a FREE - WE ARE GOING TO SELL YOU OFF option. That would demonstrate ethical business practices.
