The world's biggest economies have dropped a long-standing public endorsement of free trade at their first meeting with the Trump administration.
Finance ministers and central bank governors from the G-20 group of leading economies, including the U.S., China, Mexico, Germany and India, held two days of tough talking in the German town of Baden-Baden.
The formal statement issued after the meeting contained only a bland reference to "working to strengthen the contribution of trade to our economies."
Conspicuous by its absence was the phrase "we will resist all forms of protectionism" that was contained in the communique from the last meeting of the group in China, July 2016.
Reports suggested China and Australia, among others, pushed hard for the commitment to be retained. German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said the talks were long and frank. Rather than omit trade from the statement altogether, he said he wanted to find a formulation all could agree.
Dropping the commitment to fight protectionism reflects serious disagreements over one of the key principles that has underpinned the global economy for years. World leaders redoubled their commitment to free trade in the wake of the global financial crisis in 2008 as they sought to prevent recession turning into a global depression.

GREAT, finally something good for the American workers, that the Democrats claim they have been looking out for, by allowing anyone and their brother to enter the USA illegally, and stay to take American jobs. All this while the USA is in a recession, where for 8 years the American people's averaged income has gone down for the middleclass, their wealth has disappeared, and the middleclass numbers have been decimated.

Under Obama and the Democrats, the 'US Workforce' has declined to it's lowest level in percentage, than any time over the last 40 years, and that percentage 40 years ago was on a much smaller US population. Today's US population is almost twice what it was 40 years ago, meaning many more American citizens are out of work today than ever before in US history, while the Obama administration had to keep dropping American workers from the 'US Workforce' in order to get the 'Unemployment Rate' to falsely and unrealistically decline, and that is called rigging the numbers.

All our major trade partners run billions of dollars in surplus trade against us, so you expect us to worry about a trade war, when if that comes it will benefit the American worker, because then it will make it profitable again to produce all the things that we used to produce here, but the Democrats policies, regulations, and taxes have driven those producers from our country, if they wanted to stay solvent and keep producing products to sell all around the world. Then they were being made by foreign workers in foreign countries, and what President Trump is doing is creating incentive for those companies, once driven out by Democrats, to one again return to the USA, and hire American workers to produce here, what they have beeen having foreign workers produce overseas.

Today the Unions are starting to love Donald Trump and the Republicans, which has you liberals, progressives, and Democrats, synonymous with socialists, communists, and fascists, scared to death. Many black people are also seeing the light, and spreading the word, which also gives you a death threat scare for the Democratic Party. This is why the Democrats are using the only thing they now how to do against someone that is becoming more popular by the day, especially with Unions and black people, and that is 'OBSTRUCTIONISM', which the American people are well aware of because it is so easily obvious, as also many American people who didn't vote for President Trump, and most people dislike and abhor it, for not giving the man the American people elected as their Prrsident, to have a chance to do the job that he promised them to get elected.

randy,

You seem to miss something on the post..

do you support free trade... That has been a basic right wing policy for as long as I have noticed..

While this policy change by the g20 will not have much of an effect in the short term, I do think trump will like it.

Or maybe with his connection in Asia, he will not be so keen on it..

In your post you have item after item which is not true or you misunderstand..

But.... the "US workforce" participation.. Man I get so sick of going over this time after time.. Those not in the workforce are retirees, students, disabled, and those who simply do not want a job among others.

Obama administration made a change the kept the unemployed counted longer the prior years. up to 99 weeks.. that was all.

I am not going to bother with all that other stuff..

It doesn't matter if you believe or not, you self-importance isn't what you believe it to be. What matters is if the Unions and black people believe it, and if President Trump produces, then those people will be ecstatic. But the Democrats will not vote on his full cabinet appointments yet, because they are trying to delay what President Trump has promised, though their poor losing, hypocritical 'OBSTRUCTIONISM, which I myself truly love, because it shows the American people what the Democrats really are, despite what they claim they are. The Democrats are fiercely scared that all the American people might learn what President Trump really is, and is why they are using obstructionism to the highest point in time that they can. Time is on President Trump's side, and when he does get his full government up and working, then the Democrats will look the fools that they are showing themselves to be, and the American people will not forget all that they are doing to try to stymie President Trump. There will be a price to pay.

perma- The 90million + out of the work force does include retirees, etc. as you point out but the Labor Participation rate is the lowest since WWII. How can that be since unemployment is below 5%. Do you see how fake the rate is ? Forbes, using different scenarios calculates the unemployment to be anywhere from 14% to 40% depending on the factors being considered. We all know that the 4.2 or 4.5% is a bogus number . I hope that the Trump administration will address this once the more important agenda items are taken care of. We have been using this fake formula for years but that does not make it right. America First !!!

I supported free trade until it was used against are people, by not really being what it is called, through currency manipulation and foreign government subsidies, that is against the rules, but are done anyway, and why are trade imbalance is so huge with all our largest trading partners. This doesn't hurt the politicians, but this is devastating for the American worker, and it is time that it is stopped. Free trade is supposed to be balanced, which it is not, but if President Trump gets his way, it will be, and that 88% of our industry that has been lost since the 1960s, will be returned and produce jobs for Americans, and grow the middleclass once again, where Obama and the Democrats have decimated the middleclass over the last 8 years.

Obama has dropped so many people from the 'US Workforce' (most of which are from the middleclass) in order to get the 'Unemployment Rate' down to a false and unrealistic percent, that it's participation rate is the lowest percentage that it has been over the last 40 years, and 40 years ago the US population was less than half of what it is today, and with the same participation rate as 40 years ago, makes the number of Americans without a job the highest ever in US history, and most of those were from the middleclass.

This country has been imploding since Obama and the Democrats took it over 8 years ago, and whether you want to believe it or not, it seems that President Trump is our last best hope to save it, not only for us, but also for our posterity. But roll the dice and get rid of President Trump, and when the collapse comes, it will be too late to then stop it.

Do you really not know how bad our situation is after Obama double the national debt in just 8 years, that took all our previous Presidents 232 years to acquire? Do you not know that the only true growth in the US Economy, while Obama and the Democrats controlled it for 8 years, was the doubling of our currency in circulation just here in the USA?

You just can't be that ignorant not to see the trouble the USA and the American people are really in, can you? It's time for a change and a savior, and Hillary Clinton was going to be just 4 more years of the last 8 years, that put us in this situation.

Do you really think the US economy grew, when Obama is the first President in US history that never had a single year of GDP growth over 2%, and he had 8 years to do it? You can't see that the measly less than 2% GDP growth came only from the Federal Government forcing a trillion dollars a year into the economy, through 'Welfare, Food Stamps, Disability Payments, and Medicaid', which was paid for by borrowing money from the Federal Reserve Board, who printed it out of thin air with no intrinsic value, just 'Fiat Currency', which is how the US Treasury has paid Obama's yearly averaged deficits of $1.3 trillion every year that he was President?

My GOD wake up, if you don't want to try to stop it, at least be aware of the tragedy that you and all Americans will suffer if President Trump is not successful.

I'm sorry, someone told you a lie, the numbers of workers dropped from the 'US Workforce' were not retirees, for retirees are not considered part of the 'US Workforce', but that number you quoted are considered still members of the 'US Workforce', who ages are from 16 years to 54 years of age. The people that retired were put on a different list, and it was not the dropped list, because they were out of work for 52 weeks and longer, and were then considered not to be looking for work, whether they really were or not, for Democrats have the uncanny ability to read people's minds, just ask one.

Are you shocked that a politician would disparage numbers when someone else spouts them but use those numbers for themselves? Please say it ain't so. If I was Trump I would have the actuaries go back and figure out the real numbers starting with the Obama administration. Then use that formula to show his numbers. Until they do that I will never believe government unemployment numbers when comparing different administrations.
