Quite frankly, one could ask the same about the modern conservative movement. In either case, opposing camps would simply maximize their own contributions, yet minimalize any benefits procured or proclaimed by the other. While both ideologies have contributed greatly to society, extremists from both continue their efforts to damage or dismiss any gains made by those within the mainstream of each.
