...But we all know that Nixon's 'war on drugs' is an abject and very expensive failure: So how is this possible, you ask?
Well, to be brutally honest, it was pretty easy really...
"In 2001 Portugal shocked the world and voted to decriminalize all drugs in response to a growing heroin problem".
Fast-forward 15 years... "Today Portugal boasts one of the lowest drug-usage rates in all of Europe".

"[T]he proportion of people in jail for crimes committed while under the influence of drugs or to feed a drug habit fell from 41 percent in 1999 to 21 percent in 2008."
But it gets even better! "When the demand falls, drug suppliers find that their once-lucrative enterprise no longer bears fruit. So they exit the market". No drug cartels, no accompanying black markets and associated violent crimes. In essence, the Portugese people are happier and freer now than they ever were during drug prohibition.
Imagine, treating adults like adults and getting a positive result. Well, I never!
