Minimum Wage Has Same Effect As Always.

Larry the Legend Loc: Not hiding in Milton

"The higher wage rate causes [businesses] to substitute capital for labor in the production process ('the substitution effect'). As a result, the demand for labor falls". Minimum wage jobs that are no longer profitable are cut and automation takes over where the people left off. This is not exactly a shock. 90 percent of American Economic Association members said in a 1976 survey that a higher minimum wage "raises unemployment among young and unskilled workers." Because they are replaced by less expensive machines.

Democrats have constantly pushed for raising the minimum wage, and as a result of their zealotry, black male teens have lost their jobs. But you won't see those teens putting the blame on the politicians where it belongs, oh no. They naturally blame the 'greedy' businessman who wouldn't let them keep their jobs at the higher wage rate. Worse, they are thrown into a labor market awash with minimum wage talent and jobs at that level get more scarce with each mandated raise. Is it any wonder they get into trouble?

The latest episode in this shameful saga is a report that Wendy's restaurant chain is replacing it's fast food workers with robots and touch-screen ordering systems:

Wendy's are not alone, earlier this month, McDonald’s announced the nationwide roll-out of touchscreen self-service kiosks as well. Goodbye entry-level jobs. Just how does a youngster start a career if s/he cannot find a company to hire him/her for minimum wage and provide the necessary training to build a productive career? What are this year's school / college leavers going to do when they open the paper or internet browser and every job has previous experience as a hiring requirement?

I got my start at 16 years old taking the eyes out of potatoes in an English fish and chip shop. It paid less than $2 equivalent per day but it taught me how the food industry works and came in handy later for both me and the people I worked for. If the minimum wage had been applicable back then, I would have been forced to sit at home and mooch off my parents. Not the best start in life.
