Look, I'm tired of low wage people complaining all the time. It's this simple. If you don't like what your paid, how about you just change your job for a better paid job. Back in the 1950, 1960, 1970 and 1980 that is what we did, we did not complain about it, we were just glad to have a job. You think you are getting low pay, let me tell you, in 1970 you started out at $1.15 per hour and it was even lower in the 1950, somewhere around $0.50 per hour. We have all had low paying jobs at one time or another. So quit your complaining and get a better job.
If you are unable to get a better paying job because you are not Educated (high school diploma)?? Then you have No One To Blame But, Yourself. You need to get your GED so you can move forward.
If you have a Criminal back ground? There again you have No One To Blame But, Yourself.
So, Quit all your crying because, No One Cares.....

I don't think you understand history. I am old enough to know from experience that back in the 1960's you could live on a minimum wage job. Today you cannot. When you say look for a better job, the problem is that most jobs in America today are at or near the minimum wage. Besides that, there are no unnecessary jobs. But I think you have a very stereotypical idea of the people who work minimum wage jobs. I just joined this site and it seems to me that it's for right wing conservative hacks.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but not the best advice if you were a motivational speaker. Your words of how to lower your expectations is somewhat different than McDonalds which suggested employees sign up for food stamps, Medicaid and a second job (it was reported by liberal MSM this past fall). I think it's best to wish them luck with negotiating for higher pay and hope for the best. Here's a good article from Bloomberg (just the way it is, which you are familiar).

Jesse,
You hit the nail on the head...the key phrase being 'negotiation'. As long as there is someone willing to work at the wage being offered then the offer is valid. Those who advocate for a higher minimum wage are just having a harder time competing with those who are willing to accept the offered wage. If illegal immigrants come here willing to accept these low paying jobs then low paying jobs will exist.
We are talking Supply and Demand here folks (economics 101). Let's take North Dakota as an example. Most McDonalds in North Dakota pay $15hr plus...and some even offer a $500 singing bonus (bonus paid on the first day of working), because there is little competition (low supply of labor) for these positions.

I've heard that, any real employees from N.D. willing to show me a check?...
There was another thread started here: similar discussion about livable wages.
It is disturbing to me how low wage workers are viewed: they are lazy, stupid, lack dreams somehow.
My suggestion is that if McDonald's franchisees were wiling to discuss: revenue, profit and loss, overhead with their employees to help them understand that this was not their future, perhaps this would get them off their butt-don't know really.
Any company that would offer their applications on tray paper mats should be avoided.

You might be wise to ask yourself ..why almost 1/2 of Americans are living in poverty today. Then check the financial facts to find that the top 1%ers increased their "take" over 17 times in the past 18 years and the minimum wage earners are getting about the same amount... equal to 1996 wages.. The rest of us are picking up the difference with government help, so they and their kids will not starve. Why not pay them a living wage and exclude the government? The wealthy do not need the extra million or so and right is right and fair is fair, so I would suggest that anyone who works all day should be paid a living wage.

What seems lost in this dialogue is that minimum wage (learning wage) workers are not complaining. The majority of the "Raise the minimum wage" action is coming from union workers whose contracts give them a raise whenever the minimum wage is raised. In California only 1.4% of workers receive the minimum wage, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also, the overwhelming majority of workers receive the minimum wage for less than one year (e.g., those that learn to show up the day after payday). You can look it up!

I am pretty new to this site myself and I had hoped it was going to be a site where both side could have a discussion on our differences, but it does seem many do not want this. Yes, I an a liberal and at times feel a little alone here, but some one has to keep trying.

I lived in the 60s, and you could not live on minium wage. Minium wage was down around $.90 an hour, I know I worked for minium wage in 1960, and I definitely could not live on it. Nice try, but no soap.

There are PLENTY of good jobs out there. The problem is that they're seeking highly skilled and educated workers, and they can't find enough. Thanks to the left dumbing down the education system, we have a lot of dumb and unskilled people looking for work.

Why are you a liberal? It's a gutless choice...the easy choice. It's easy to be a liberal.

Tony,
Your memory may be fading a bit. I got married in 1960 and the minimum wage was $1.00 per hour, $40.00 a week and you could not raise a family on $40.00 a week in 1960. I started to work as a teenager in 1954 at a $.25 an hour "learning wage," the first year and over the next 14 years worked my way up to General Manager of the company after many salary increases. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0774473.html Minimum wage 1955-2013

Tony, you write: "the problem is that most jobs in America today are at or near the minimum wage." This is sheer nonsense.

In California only 1.4% of workers are paid the minimum wage (learning wage) or less and 4.7% nationally, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Department of Labor and the U.S. Census. You will be more believable if you include some facts when you make such outrageous claims http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2012tbls.htm.
