I have received two such calls since the 1st of the year. First thing I noted on the call the number was blocked and that call, at least she said it was, the VA. The last time at the VA was 1978 and the only time so whatever she was talking about I wasn't buying.

Never give out information like that, unless you are damn sure you are talking to the right person. Especially over the phone or internet.

Warning-and just not for VETS.

Collection agencies and telemarketers are using robo-dialers for soliciting and generally harassing people in the privacy of their homes. Robo-dialers are automated computers that will call you at all hours of the night and day, and, in the case of collection agencies, harass you after you have asked them to stop calling. Robo-dialing is often in conflict with the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, and certain fines can be as much as $500 per call. Various attorneys are pursuing class action lawsuits against the offenders.

What you may not realize is that those robots and auto dialers are illegal, and you have legal recourse if they harass you repeatedly. The Supreme Court decided that consumers can litigate against telemarketing companies in the federal court system. You owe it to yourself to be informed. I will not recommend any attorney, but try googling robo-dialers class action and, if you are being harassed, and get informed.

Warning-and just not for VETS. br br Collection a... (show quote)

There is an app for the Android, called PrivacyStar. It puts a stop to that nonsense, and even reports abusers to the Federal Trade to Commission. It also has reverse call look-up, so you can find out who is calling.

Once you install the app, your answer call screen is transformed. PrivacyStar shows you the number calling you, as well as buttons that let you block the call, send the caller a text message such as “Can’t talk now. What’s up?” or “I’ll call you later” or a custom message you can define yourself. There’s also a history button you can tap to see how many times the number has called you.

Its call and text blocking features let you block specific numbers, entire area codes or all private and unknown numbers. PrivacyStar automatically hangs up or delivers a busy signal to blocked callers, and texts from blocked numbers never arrive on your phone.

The reverse call look-up feature is slick and lets you scan your call log and look up any number on it. When I tested it, the app was able to identify land lines well but less than half of the mobile numbers I tried.

The free version of the app comes with ads and only gives you real-time caller IDs and reverse call lookups for one week. If you want to keep those features, you’ll have to ante up for a paid subscription, which is $2.99 a month. By doing so you also lose the ads.

Well worth the money IMHO.
