You would think they would quickly move the fish away from it's escape rout back through the hole in the ice.

That fish appears to be a northern pike and they have to many bones in them to bother with. My aunt and uncle when they were alive in Minnesota always gave the big northerns to the natives and they ground them up and made fish sticks out of them.
