Thanks, SSgt. There are more Communists in America than in Russia, today. At least in positions of influence.
At the risk of perhaps causing problems around the world (as pertains to the inner workings in the international communist organizations), I would have to say that most likely V. Putin needed to "profess" atheism, in order to accomplish what he and others have accomplished, the fall of the Soviet Union. He was never an atheist.
I have read that he was first denied membership in Komsomol, because he was considered too rowdy. I believe he felt more individualistic than the norm at that time in the USSR.
