In Latest Weekly Address Obama Proves He Doesn'™t Understand Economics

By Onan Coca writing for Constitution.com December 21, 2016

I think we'™ve all known for quite some time that President Obama (and the vast majority of Democrat politicians) have no understanding of how economics works in the real world. However, day after day, month after month, year after year, they continue to provide evidence that the most basic tenets of economics simply eludes their understanding. The latest example of their ignorance comes to us from the President himself, who, in his most recent weekly address told America that it was the government'™s job to ensure a "œfair and competitive marketplace."

This statement is infantile in understanding and completely illogical in practice. The only thing that government involvement ensures is an UNFAIR and NONcompetitive marketplace.

When the government gets involved they choose winners and losers, not based on merit but based on what the current administration deems to be the "greater good." Only the free market can offer a FAIR marketplace because it affords competitors the opportunity to present their wares to the consumer free of government chains.

When the government gets involved they LIMIT competition by driving the costs of competing ever upward. It'™s the reason that as Obamacare has continued, more and more health insurers have dropped out of the government marketplace, only the biggest and wealthiest can afford to be involved. This same problem can be seen at a smaller scale in other industries that are highly regulated - like Cable television, Internet providers, Telecom industry, Healthcare, Pharmaceuticals, and Banking. The little guys can'™t survive in a highly regulated industry, which means the competition dries up (oh, and it also means that prices SKYROCKET).

The free market is the only way to ensure fairness and competition in the American economy.

Anyway, here'™s the President speaking as an uniformed debutante on economic policy.

https://youtu.be/SZ5UEIC-o28

"If you'™ve ever played a game of basketball in a gym, or entered a contest in school, or started a small business in your hometown, you know that competition is a good thing. It pushes us to do our best. And you know that a fight is fair only when everybody has a chance to win, when the playing field is level for everybody, and the rules are clear and consistent.

"That'™s important to our consumers, our workers, our employers, and our farmers. You deserve a fair shake, even though there might be much bigger players in the market. Without a truly competitive marketplace, those big companies can raise costs, or slack off on offering good service, or keep their workers' wages too low. And in an era when large corporations often merge to form even larger ones, our leaders have an even greater responsibility to look out for us as consumers.

"To keep America'™s economy growing and America'™s businesses thriving, we need to protect the principle of fair competition. That'™s not, by the way, a Democratic idea or a Republican idea -“ it'™s an American idea, because it'™s the best way to make sure the best ideas rise to the top.

"My administration has done a lot to keep the marketplace fair. We defended a free, open, and accessible internet that doesn'™t let service providers pick winners and losers. We cracked down on conflicts of interest by making sure professionals who give you retirement advice do so in your best interest, not in theirs. And in the last few months, we'™ve made even more progress.

"This week, my Department of Agriculture took major steps to protect farmers from unfair treatment by bigger processors. These rules will help swine, beef cattle, and especially poultry growers who have fewer choices in where they sell their products.

"This month, the FDA started taking steps to make hearing aids more affordable for more than the nearly 30 million Americans suffering from the frustration of hearing loss. We think people with moderate hearing loss should be able to buy a hearing aid over the counter as easily as you can buy reading glasses at your local pharmacy.

"This year we also addressed two other problems that keep workers and wages down: the overuse of non-compete agreements that hurt workers in the job market, and the unfair practices of companies that collude to set wages below the market rate. And we backed new steps, including a law I just signed to fight robot scalpers that artificially drive up ticket prices, and a rule that requires airlines to reimburse your baggage fees if your bags don'™t make it to your destination when you do.

"Finally, it'™s this principle of competition that'™s at the very heart of our health reform. In fact, it'™s the reason we call it the Affordable Care Act; it makes insurance companies compete for your business, which is helping millions afford the care that helps them get and stay healthy. By the way, it'™s open enrollment season right now. You can still sign up on HealthCare.gov until January 31st and get covered for 2017.

"Our free-market economy only works when there'™s competition. And competition only works when rules are in place to keep it fair and open and
honest. Whether you'™re building the next big thing or just want to be treated right as a customer, that'™s good for you and good for the country."

In submitting this for discussion I am using his own words to emphasize Obama's version of a "free-market economy" is one which is regulated to death. The American people dodged a bullet November 8th by rejecting Hillary Clinton, whose economic policies would have continued the regulatory stranglehold this administration has on the economy and allowed American business to slowly smother under their weight. Both of these fascists believe government is the source of private sector jobs and growth, and the incompatibility of fascism with free enterprise would result in the death of capitalism and our freedoms along with it. ObamaCare is the BEST POSSIBLE example to demonstrate the folly of their ideas.

You make what is known in debate circles as a "Glittering Generality". A specious statement. It has a ring of truth but critical facts are hidden from view. One of the more critical and least talked about facts relating to the political workings of Washington is related to the widely understood fact that one party tries to do whatever it can to obstruct the other party's goals. That's why this little factoid is important: Since the Hoover administration (for the past 84 years), Democrat Presidents have had BOTH houses of Congress under THEIR party's control for 32 of those years. Republican Presidents have had a Republican House and Senate for only 8 1/2 years. This explains why our country has been drifting more and more to the LEFT, and why more Democrat policies are implemented.

NO ONE can claim that the Democrat party is more pro Free Enterprise and pro small Business than the Republican party. NOR can anyone claim that Obama's chief goal of "fundamentally changing America" meant he wanted to make us MORE FREE. By controlling the engine of the economy (business and labor) through regulation and socio/political engineering (his bastardization of our capitalistic economy through "Crony Capitalism) and picking winners and losers based on his world view and the amount of financial support his favored "crony's" gave his campaigns, he distorted the economy and confused investors and corporations about naturally occurring economic trends to the point (as any salesman knows) the natural reaction of a confused mind is to say "NO!"

The reality we are left with is shown in the following nine charts depicting Obama's effect on America's economy:

Two million 400,000 new customers have signed up for Obama Care this sign up period 400,000 more that last year The free market doesn’t exist. Every market has some rules and boundaries that restrict freedom of choice. A market looks free only because we so unconditionally accept its underlying restrictions that we fail to see them. How ‘free’ a market is cannot be objectively defined. It is a political definition. The usual claim by free-market economists that they are trying to defend the market from politically motivated interference by the government is false. Government is always involved and those free-marketeers are as politically motivated as anyone. Overcoming the myth that there is such a thing as an objectively defined ‘free market’ is the first step towards understanding capitalism.
