Reagans approval rating during his 8 years in office was nothing spectacular a 52.8% average. That places him just behind Kennedy, Clinton and Eisenhower, but also George HW Bush and Lyndon Johnson neither of whom are candidates for Mt. Rushmore.

The controversy around Presidents doesn't end when their term in office does. History will make them greater, or smaller, depending on who's writing it. I have found faults and strengths in the last 5 Presidents I've lived under.

It has always confused me when we view another human as something more than flesh and blood. Sometimes people make mistakes, it is what they do with those mistakes that count. President Regan saw UFOs, Kennedy has a frail back, Clinton had flings, Bush had problems pronouncing words, and Johnson was vain (in fact, he refused to accept the portrait pained saying it was the ugliest thing her ever saw). Presidents are people -- their popularity swell and drop with the moods of the citizens of the US. As wiser people have said, history and the way a president is portrayed depends on who is doing the writing.

Well, there you go again.
But East Berliners may not have seen Buggles, Nena, Kajagoogoo, A-Ha without his radio free Europe initiatives paving the way. BTW, MTV debuted the same year he was first inaugurated.

I am only using Reagan as a reference point, as to how the Republicans are still riding his coattails, which is ironic for he was a mediocre President at best!

A recent CNN poll named JFK as the most popular past President with an approval of over 90%. He was a reckless womanizer.

Ronald Reagan came in second with 78%. He stayed sober and kept his pants zipped.

Followed by Bill Clinton at 74%. He was a sex addict and predator.

George Bush was a recovered(?) alcoholic.

For all their character defects, most of our presidents had redeemable qualities.

Just what those qualities are and how they counter failings is an on-going judgement of history.

You're right. Should have proof-read more carefully before posting. Thanks for catching that. I stand corrected.

If it's a "hoax", it's perpetrated by more than Republicans. Most people truly liked Reagan and thought he had guts enough to "tell it like it is". Of course that's only my opinion.

Opinions are valued, my personal remembrance of President Regan is quite different than yours. I really liked him, he was thoughtful, truthful, and had a sense of humor. Sure he made some people unhappy, but as the saying goes... you can not make everyone happy 100 percent of the time. Now Obama seems to be not making most of the people happy, I wonder what will be written of him. Will he even come to the level of mediocre? Will he be remembered for Obamacare, or perhaps his falsehoods, or will his shining moment be his foreign affair policies. Time will tell.

No problem. My thoughts are free for all ( believe me, there is usually a " freeforall " going on with my thoughts anyway. ) :)

There will, no doubt, be many books written about him in the years to come. Some written by the "left" and some by the "right". It will be interesting to note the different historical contents.
