Hobby Lobby Founder: Clinton Is A Frightening Prospect For Religious Freedom


Hobby Lobby founder and CEO David Green used to be scared of Donald Trump. However, he’s even more frightened by Hillary Clinton — specifically that if elected, she will completely disregard the deeply held beliefs and religious freedoms of Christians.

“There is no getting around the fact that Jesus offends some people,” Green wrote in his book More than a Hobby. “Nevertheless, he is too important in my life for me to cower in fear of mentioning his name.”

Because of his stance, Green authored a piece for USA Today, throwing his support behind Trump on that basis.

Early in the Republican primary race, Green supported Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., saying at the time that Trump “scares me to death.”

However, Green’s experiences fighting for the right to practice his faith and to run his business according to his values has landed him in a position to vote based on what he believes will be the best outcome in terms of religious freedom.

In June 2014, the Supreme Court heard a case of appeal from Green’s company. As a pro-life Christian, Green fought against a mandate under The Affordable Care Act which said companies must cover contraceptives under their health plans — including abortificiant drugs.

The landmark case of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby ruled in favor of the company, determining that for-profit companies can be exempted from a law that is in violation of the owner’s religious conscience.

” … it’s frightening to think that we — and all Americans — were just one judge away from losing our religious freedom,” wrote Green, noting that the decision on the case was 5-4.

“Make no mistake, the vacancy left by Justice Scalia and the subsequent appointment to fill his seat makes this presidential election one of the most significant in modern times,” Green continued.

Green reminded readers of the significance of their rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

“The Constitution was created for the express purpose of protecting certain fundamental rights — not just when they’re aligned with the current administration’s policies, and not just when they’re convenient — but as the highest priority for our lawmakers and elected officials,” he wrote.

Green then pointed to Clinton’s record on religious freedom.

“During a 2015 speech at the Women in the World Summit, Hillary Clinton declared that religious beliefs ‘have to be changed,'” he recounted.

He worries her words are a chilling prediction.

“What I fear she really means is that the beliefs of people of faith across our nation will be discounted, and those people will be forced to violate their conscience under her presidency — a philosophy that would be carried out by anyone she nominates for the Supreme Court,” he wrote, adding that, “Clinton has made no secret she believes government interests supersede the protection of religious liberty.”

He contrasted this fact with the alternative.

” … Donald Trump has been steadfast in expressing his commitment to uphold the Constitution, and his list of possible Supreme Court nominees inspires confidence that there is hope in my future — and in my grandchildren’s future — for a country that will value those most fundamental rights,” he wrote.

Green said religious freedom in America as it currently stands is in an extremely fragile state.

“America’s foundation of religious liberty is already at risk. With Hillary Clinton as president, our foundation will surely crumble. For Americans who value freedom of religion, we must elect a president who will support a Supreme Court that upholds not only this freedom, but all that have emanated from it. That president is Donald Trump,” he wrote.

Radio host and author Eric Metaxas agrees with Green’s assessment, calling Clinton an “enemy to religious liberty.”

Her comment that Christians must change their religious beliefs is “the antithesis of what the founders enshrined in religious liberty, and every American should be scared. It’s not about Christians. It’s about American freedom,” Metaxes told Fox News.
