I agree with you about an intruder coming through the door being justification enough to shoot him, but I disagree with you about the perp shooting me before I shot him if I waited to see if he had a gun. I would agree with that, too, though, if I lived in a one-story ranch or similar home that would not allow me much reaction time. I live in a 3-story townhouse, and my bedroom is on the top floor. An intruder has no option to enter than from the ground floor. My dog would hear the intrusion, and I would be up and armed well before the intruder could make his way up 2 flights of stairs, especially since he would not be likely to do so straightaway. None of us knows, with certainty, how we would react, and odds are that I would probably not try to read the maker's name on his gun before shooting him, but if I saw that the intruder coming up my stairs was carrying only a knife or a bat, I might very well try to just scare him off and call the police. I have no bloodlust.

Many people think that killing some "thug" would feel good. Either they've never killed anyone before or they need mental health attention. I used to hunt a lot until I was in combat now I have lost my desire to kill anything. I'll defend my family but I don't look forward to killing.
