A National Registry of Firearms is prohibited under US Law, the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986. It was passed as a response to repeated abuses of rights and violations of the law by BATFE Agents. (It was still the BATF back then ). An estimated 75% of BATF cases were nothing more than innocent mistakes by ordinary people who thought they were complying with all the paperwork.

This is not a "registry of gun owners." It is a list of people who may or may not own guns. It does not keep track of what kind of guns, or how many they own, or serial numbers, or anything else. It is also doubtful that the NRA will ever want to confiscate your firearms, unlike the Federal Government. Eric Holder said that absent mass confiscations, the gun control proposals put forth by the Obama Administration were unlikely to have much effect. Political grandstanding at the expense of law-abiding citizens.
