A Fascinating Book

I want to pass on a recommendation of a relatively new book. It is called “Dark Money.” The author, Jane Mayer, describes the extensive activities of the Koch Brothers in propagandizing right-wing points of view that benefited them financially.

The book started out as an article or two that appeared in The New Yorker Magazine. In case you are unfamiliar with the policies of The New Yorker Magazine, they are known for perhaps the most careful and strict fact checking in the publishing business. It is also a sure thing that the publisher of this book, Doubleday, did their own fact checking and consulted carefully with lawyers before issuing this work.

Mayer discovered after her New Yorker article that she was being investigated by a private detective to see if he could find anything detrimental about her (he couldn't), and was also accused of plagiarizing from the works of a number of authors. A check with the authors revealed that not a one of them felt she had plagiarized from them.

The book is strictly factual, without hysterical emotion. It simply states that this happened, that happened, so and so paid for such and such a thing, and so on. I saw her interviewed by two different people, and in each interview she was strictly factual, not at all emotional.

If you want to learn how many people in this country have had their political views pushed to the right, read this book.

So, the contention would be the Koch brothers are the devil. Last week it was Walmart. It is so diffilcult to keep up with Socialist/Progressives Devils. They change weekly.

A question, is it also your contention, and the New Yorker, that Wall Street, the SEICU, AFL-CIO and all the organzations Mr. Soros funds are not of the same ilk? Of course, we have Warren Buffett, who is totally against the pipeline, who owns a majority stock in the railway that transports oil with an abysmal accident record.

The clear answer is both sides are equally guilty. You just do not wish to admit such is a fact.

As another suggestion and if you can wait, find a good used book store. Frequently you can find something on your reading list...you just have to have patience for it to show up.

And...another suggestion is your county library. Our county has three big used book stores. Check and see if your county has such.

AbeBooks.com has it for around 20.00 The Koch brothers have about one fiftieth the amount of money to fund conservative causes as Soros has to fund "progressive causes. Both use all the money they have available, Soros is WAY AHEAD.

The New Yorker Magazine is an elitist controlled magazine that follows the elitist agenda. Fact based or not, that is what they are all about. They may very well be right about the Koch brothers, but beyond that, I give the New Yorker no credence at all.

One of the criticisms of this book is that it didn't discuss the political activity of Soros and the very wealthy on that side of the political spectrum. This is a specious argument because the book is about the Koch Brothers and their cohorts. Look at the book's subtitle: "The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right." To criticize the book because it doesn't discuss Soros is rather like criticizing a book about trees because it didn't have chapters on zinnias.

Incidentally, you are uninformed about how much money the Koch Brothers have. They have much, much more than you think they do. Soros has a net worth of 23 billion. Each of the two Koch brothers -- EACH, mind you -- has a net worth of 41.1 billion. So that is 82.2 billion versus 23 billion. Your math and your information are as f=== up as your political persuasions.

Gener, if you have any complaints about the book Dark Money, please let us know what they are. Your attitude towards the New Yorker is merely lower class snobbery -- pride in being ignorant. Can you name a few articles in it that you have read recently ? I doubt it, because I am sure that if you read it, most of the time you would find it extremely informative. I grant you that there are occasional issues that are largely useless -- the annual fashion issue, for instance, which I promptly dump in the trash. But the factual articles in it cannot be beaten, not by those in Harpers, The Atlantic or any other magazine I read.
