My brother enlisted right after Pearl Harbor as did many others. The draft was in effect and after that initial shock, the volunteer rate plummeted and the draft became increasingly necessary to meet requirements.

I question why Dalton Trumbo & other communists served. Were they drafted or did they volunteer? If they volunteered, was it because of America or to save Joseph Stalin? I suspect the latter.

As for John Wayne, I understand that he was under contract for a certain number of films and his reason for not volunteering was that he would have been subject to a lawsuit, a decision he regretted for the rest of his life. I don't think the studio would have pursued any lawsuit and that it was a lame excuse. For whatever it's worth, he was 34 at the time of Pearl Harbor & probably less likely to have been drafted.

Many other stars and future stars did volunteer, including James Stewart who actually went through a body building program to put on enough weight to qualify for service after having been rejected twice due to underweight. Frank Sinatra was rejected twice for an ear condition.

What could have been done about the 10 sailors apprehended and then humiliated? Immediately, there should have been a U.S. carrier task force sent to that Island, and given the Iranians an ultimatum, give up the sailors and boats immediately or lose that Island.
