According to the Census Bureau, about 13.6% of U.S. households received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits last year, up from 8.6% in 2008, at the recession's height. With annual cost of $75 billion.

I am a member of BFS (before food stamps) when if you were of low income (very) you went down to the court house or a simiular govt. enity of which you were given a 12X4 inch square log of 'American cheese' and a box of powdered milk. That was it. No prime steaks, lobsters. etc. Goodies that you and I must avoid unless from to time on sale. However because it's you and I that pay for her purchases she can afford to pay any price. Not too long ago at Fry's my wife was behind a big ' heavy duty' Mama with her cart filled over the brim with all kinds of goodies. It took some time for the clerk to add all this up. Toward the end the clerk told this person that she was over her limit. this person right away got on her cell phone and within minutes got it all approved. Who she called we will never know. But what we do know is the one of the reasons the current 'president' got reelected. I include my version of the current "SNAP" program,' safety net' and all.

U.S goverment "safety net"
