Today in history, at 10:29 Moscow time, Sputnik was launched. The satellite was 22" in diameter, weighed 184 pounds, and traveled at 18,000 miles per hour around the earth in an elliptical orbit with an apogee of 584 miles, and a perigee of 143. The launch was the fire that the US space program needed to have lit under it's butt.
In other news:

Today in History, in 1777, the Battle of Germantown, PA was fought. Although it was a British victory, casualties were heavy on both sides, and the poorly trained, poorly equipped and outnumbered Americans, although they lost, surprised the British with the number of casualties they were able to inflict before having to retreat because, among other things, they ran out of ammo again, much like Breed's Hill, 2 years earlier.

On this day in 1822, Rutherford B Hayes, 19th president of the United States, was born.

On this day in 1861, Frederic Remington, famous for his paintings of the Old West, was born.

On this day in 1927, work on Mount Rushmore was officially begun.

Today in 1941, Anne Rice, author of "Interview With the Vampire" and "The Vampire Lestat," was born in New Orleans.

Today in 1970, Janis Joplin died of a heroin overdose.

Shocking that you could speak of America's pastime in such an irreverent manner.

BTW...I remember Sputnik very well, and the impact it had on the American public. Of course, it did spur on 'the race for space' which eventually led to our leaving the Ruskies in the dust with our manned flights and culminating in the moon landing.

Doesn't appear that we're leaving the Ruskies "in the dust" these days. Looks like we're "bringing up the rear."
