We bring out the humor in others. In Combat training at Camp Pendleton, California,63 years ago, we were on our knees scrubbing the concrete floor (deck) of our Quonset hut, when the most Junior of our Drill Instructors began his nightly ritual of "I don' wanna' see nothin' but Elbows and Assholes," to which I automatically responded "I'm an elbow."

It brought out the humor in the entire platoon, who stood to lose their being if they laughed. Too bad, but the DI was laughing the loudest, and lost his opportunity to disband the Corps right then and there.

I never claimed credit that night, which is why I am alive to claim it tonight.
