Today in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called "The Defense of Fort McHenry." In 1931, it was set to music and became "The Star-Spangled Banner."

I didn't know that. What song was our national anthem before that?

How many of the four verses do you know, by 'heart' :?:

If all four, you would certainly belong to a minuscule number of those who do.

I can only guess either 'My Country 'Tis of Thee,' , or 'America The Beautiful.' Again...just guessing.

I actually doubt there was a recognized/official national anthem prior to 1931.

We are in the poor side of the town, 98% Mexican descent we sang all of our nations songs including "Texas our Texas" in the choir so Tejano's as Texans were brought to a stricter standard. Our teacher was black, ha we even had to learn some black sad songs.

If, indeed, you are saying you can recite or sing all four verses by heart/memory...kudos to you :!: I've never known a single individual who could do so, although I was/am aware of them.

Somewhat similar to 'In God We Trust,' and 'under God' being added to our currency and Pledge of Allegiance, respectively, many decades after their inception. In the case of U.S. paper currency, the words 'In God We Trust' did not become official, I believe, until the 1960s, although the phrase was issued on coins since the Civil War. BTW...thanks to you, Loki, for these occasional 'dates in history' threads. I, for one, enjoy them.

You're never to old to learn but I know when you're young many things are memorized without too much trouble. Maybe that's why progressives want to get rid of Pro-American songs in school. Here in the Mexican and black side of town they still recite the Pledge of Allegiance in schools.

I don't usually follow things like movie stars, and crap like that. Military and Political History still fascinate me. Did I tell you I had my first heart surgery on December 7th? I figure I'm just lucky that I did't have a Doctor Yamamoto as the lead surgeon.

No doubt, due to his fear of awakening a sleeping Loki.
