I am going to use Arthurdale, West Virginia as a perfect example of just how screwed up the best laid plans of a socialist model driven by our government can become.

LIBERALS SHOULD READ SLOW (It's ok if your lips move)

Arthurdale was the first of many New Deal planned communities established under Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. It was intended to take impoverished laborers, farmers, and coal miners and move them to a modern rural community that would allow them to become economically self-sufficient.

The idea for such a self-sufficient community originated when Eleanor Roosevelt learned through her lover, Lorena Hickok, of a plan to relocate a group of West Virginia coal miners to a nearby farm with the intention that they could combine subsistence farming with simple industries to reclaim their economic footing. Mrs. Roosevelt was so passionate about the concept that she brought it to the attention of her husband, who decided to place the project under the direction of the United States Department of the Interior.

Construction began at the end of 1933

The press release painted Arthurdale as a "demonstration project" where Roosevelt's socialist government would help unemployed coal miners.

Each family would be given a modest home and enough acreage to raise their own food and crops.

From its earliest stages, selecting Arthurdale's homesteaders was a contradictory process. applicants had to have practical farming knowledge. By October, over 600 applications had been received. In addition to knowing how to farm, homesteaders had to be physically fit, have a certain education and intelligence level, and demonstrate the potential to succeed at Arthurdale. An eight-page questionnaire and follow-up interview were also a part of the process, and those favorable applicants were interviewed in their homes and asked questions about the health and stability of their families.

By virtue of these requirements, Arthurdale's homesteaders were by majority white, married couples who had or wanted to have children. Single people and immigrants were excluded.

Of interest was the typical socialist (communistic) requirement that There were to be no private employment options. Want to open your own business and hire your neighbors.... Hell no!... Only the government could provide employment and it quickly failed.

When the community failed to attract industry, Eleanor Roosevelt arranged for General Electric to open an operation there. Although General Electric did not stay for long, several other industries such as vacuum, faucet, and tractor manufacturing as well as military supply industries tried to set up shop in Arthurdale, with only the Sterling Faucet company having a long term presence. Additionally, most families found it impossible to cultivate sufficient crops to feed themselves, and many remained dependent on the relief system.

So here, once again we see what happens when the government comes up with central planning for you and your family.... Have the liberals on here learned from this little example of another failed socialist experiment or will they keep on the Obama path to ruin?

You might also want to consider the socialist story promoted by Hollywood during this period.... It featured Henry Fonda (father of Jane Fonda) and the movie did it's best to promote on a small scale the ideology of a socialist community.

The movie? Grapes of Wrath!

How many major financial disasters occurred before FDR? Here's the answer 38, including 4 depressions, I'll let you go do the research after FDR, okay.

I find it sad that all you got out of that story was nonsence. Not the topic at all.

You have a learning problem?

So where do I sign up to get my free farm? I googled it by Obama isn't offering anything even remotely close to it? And did you know that Red States receive more government aid than Blue States so if cons hate socialism then quit taking part in it!

And one other thing, did you know that under Obama the stock market has hit record highs and there are more millionaires and billionaires than at any other point in our history. Hell, our politicians have become so wealthy that they don't need political donations to run for office. As for evil commie unions--membership is at the lowest point in the past 70 years! Wages are down, profits are up, as are retained earnings.

What I don't understand is if this is what socialism produces just why are cons so upset about it???

That sex was the hook, a tornado hit them in 1878 and pretty much ended the movement. It was complicated, rotating "swingers", Older man initiated the younger women, the older women initiated the younger teen men..... yes it was a merry communal bunch. But group ownership of businesses, lack of ability to be successful in the communally owned businesses as an individual overcame the free sex thing, men , after a while stop thinking with the "little head" and get more adult ambitions.....I guess....

You know what's truly sad, that you don't understand correlations. If a supposed free enterprise environement existed before FDR, one would assume that it was a wonderful place to do business and everyone would benefit, clearly, since FDR the bumps and travails of your purported supposition that we have been under a communist system has resulted in better wages, better work environments and in fact fewer recessions and depressions. So go f___k yourself, idiot.

No, not communist, but too regulated. Especially today. All capitalist systems have boom and bust cycles. It is the nature of such a system. All others have one long, suffering, bust. In the CCCP, that saying was "We pretend to work. They pretend to pay us."
Any economist of any politically neutral bent can explain it I their college classes.

Well, well Once again after receiving a factual spanking all the like of you and your fellow liberals can throw up is more of your vomit into the sky. This thread is like watching the forth of July fireworks.

Tell you what fool:

In the opening post of this thread I gave one example of a socialist government design and creation of a communist utopia which promptly failed.

They gave away the land they purchased with taxpayer dollars to individual (all white) selected citizens. They built them a home and even selected the refrigerators for their houses. They brought in industry and outlawed individual drive to become local capitalist..... The experiment failed.

So now it is your turn.... You get to show us a city where the Government set up another city. (see above rules) and it grew and prospered without freedom and capitalism.

Go ahead.... Put up or shut up fool!
