I say more power to her since from what I have seen of reporters the current qualifications are pretty lax.

If the plan is to toss out the US Constitution, then let's place more limitations on who can run for Congressional office. Let's disallow those who want to control the rest of us - the socialists and communists in the Democrat Party.

I'm not surprised. You don't seem to value basic freedoms.

Professionals in the medical field, such as licensed doctors and therapists, are bound under law to report those in their care who threaten to take a person's life or their own; those people who are not licensed professionals in those fields are not bound by this law. These licensed professionals are also bound under law to refuse to hand over personal information about their patients; those people who are not licensed in this field do not have this protection.

Placing limits and protections on licensed professionals is how these areas are regulated for the common good. (BTW, the "common good" is not a Marxist or socialist term, as so many here assert: “Government is instituted for the common good..." John Adams;“The aim of every political constitution is, or ought to be, first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern, and most virtue to pursue, the common good of the society..." James Madison; just a small sampling)

The "shield law" is both an obligation and protection for the journalist: this is absolutely necessary for helping to protect freedom of the press, source and reporter alike, as well as our basic right to free speech. If everyone who puts pen to paper or keyboard to internet or whatever, don't you think that such a dilution of this protection and obligation would render it useless?

I am not arguing with you here but it is my interpretation of the "shield law " is that it is also trying to determine who is and is not a journalist. It is also from reading this that the concern was raised that it seams to leave out bloggers and other forms of internet journalism. I don't know if that was her intent or not to leave the internet people out but that is what some in Washington seem to be concerned with. As with any law you have to be concerned as to are you protecting the journalist or are you limiting as to who can be a journalist under the law and thus be prosecuted or free under the law.

jour·nal·ist /ˈjərnl-ist/

Noun

A person who writes for newspapers or magazines or prepares news to be broadcast on radio or television.

Synonyms

pressman - publicist - reporter - newsman - newspaperman

All of the "definitions" of "journalist" refer to "an occupation" or a person whose "job" it is to promulgate news, thus inferring that to be a "journalist" one must be "paid" by someone, or earn a living through "journalism".

Origin:
1825–35; < French journalisme.

An "occupation", however, can be defined as something that one "spends time on, such as a 'job' or a 'hobby'.

It's probably time to "re-define" the meaning of "journalist" to legally include (although it is already defined as such in many dictionaries), "one who keeps a journal".

The government (as usual) wants to insert it's "influence" into another area in which it has no business. I agree with the idea that government would be better served "limiting who may run for Congress" by instituting some "criteria" mandating education, common sense, and honesty.

Believe it or not, there are millions of people in this country that trust the word of "blog journalists" more than the "media" or government (and with, in my estimation, good reason. Even though some "bloggers" lie, mislead, and are inaccurate, the media and government are just as guilty of these offenses as they are.

Feinstien is just another Congressperson who wants all voices that don't agree with her silenced, or at least "punished" by the law (which she and her cohorts make up).

So lets see if you are paid to tell a story (journalist or propagandists) then you are covered. But if you are a blogger and even if you are telling (writing, journaling) you are not covered.

So if you are a paid liar you are covered and a truth telling blogger you are fair game. Sounds like our government in action to me.

I have a feeling most trolls do their dirty deeds for an "atta boy" and a pat on the back that makes them feel good for a few seconds.
