http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/qa-ramadan-muslims-fast-day-31849218This is an excellent description of one of the 5 pillars of the Muslim Faith, Ramadan. If you go to an Islamic country during this time you be asked to, "take nothing by mouth during daylight hours." It would be very insulting to your hosts who are "fasting." But here's the deal. At 5PM or so the Eid gun is fired and they break their daily fast - with a feast!! They feast all night long! Then it's back to the fast when the morning Eid gun is fired. About 3 weeks into this upside down existence devout Muslims are bouncing off the walls. They will tell you it's from lack of nourishment but they may have gained 10 - 15 pounds by then! It's sleep deprivation that is knocking them loopy. By the end of Ramadan they have to be carried into the mosques for Eid-Al-Fitr, the really BIG feast to break the Ramadan "fast." If you ask
them they're weak & starving but the reality is much different.
Well, today marks the start of this years pretend observance. Thought it might be timely.
