This has been coming for a while. Banks report cash deposits now over 5 K. They say over 10, but I know people who work at the banks.
Some people got their money offshore in time but that's harder to do now. They report all accounts if the balance is over 10K USD at anytime.
Many countries responded to the new draconian record keeping and reporting rules by denying new accounts to US citizens.
You don't have to report foreign real estate yet (until you sell it and take profit).
Some people invested in gold and other precious metals. Of course they did confiscate all that from US citizens back in the 30's except for US gold coins. Next time they might just take it all, who knows?
A lot of people do "midnight gardening" and bury it. heh.
I think its all about control. I use money orders a lot and cash whenever I can. The government hates that because they have to know exactly what everyone is buying and what it cost.
They also have their eyes on all the IRA's and 401K's. They will be next for Uncle Sammy Grabby hands.
Eventually the banks are going to charge people just to keep their money in there. That's when I'm pulling out all of mine remaining in there.
Of course they could give every account holder a haircut like they did in Cyprus, etc. Many EU countries have restricted the cash you can withdraw and also the amount you can keep in safety deposit boxes.
The expected IMF announcement in October that the RMB will be included as a world reserve currency is going to shake up the dollar and the stock market anyway so plan accordingly NOW. I have.
Also there is always barter. How are they going to track that?
Darn 'gummits" are worse than a bunch of nosey old women who also happen to be thieves.

Who wonders how the banks can launder 100's of billions in drug money, but the gov just can't catch the drug pushers or the banks doing the laundering?
They go after the small fries.
They just might be in cahoots with the "Big Boys".
Any one that does research knows the biggest drug importer is the CIA.
We are dealing with crooks, that get a free pass; but Joe Q public is kept under the watchful eye of Big Brother.
