Today, in 1962, in a game against the New York Knicks, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in a single game, a record that still stands 53 years later.

Yes that's great ! But of much more importance is the 260th birthday of the Marine Corps, established this day in 1775. Let's sound off you Guy's and Ladies !

I hate to tell you this, Mr. Naval Aviation, but the Corps was founded on Nov 10, 1775. See the enclosed link, and the statement from the US Department of Defense.

History of Marine Corps Day

The United States Marine Corps was established on November 10, 1775, to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. The recruiting headquarters was set up by Capt. Samuel Nicholas in the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia, which is considered to be the birthplace of the Marines.

After success in many campaigns, the Corps was abolished at the close of the Revolutionary War for reasons of economy. On July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Corps, named it the United States Marine Corps and directed that it be available for service under the Secretary of the Navy.

The Corps celebrated its birthday, or Marine Corps Day, on July 11 from 1799 until 1921 when the date was permanently changed to November 10 to commemorate the establishment of the Corps to aid in the Revolutionary War.

The day is still observed by U. S. Marines worldwide. Special exhibits, parades, drill team performances, and speeches typically mark the occasion. The Birthday Ball, which culminates in the cutting of the birthday cake, is held that evening in Washington, D.C. It is not possible to determine precisely when the first cake ceremony was held, but the first on record took place at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., in 1937. Major General Thomas Holcomb, the Commandant, presided at an open house for Marine Corps officers, including the cutting of a huge cake in the shape of Tun

That being said, Thank You, Marines, birthday or not.

Couple of things.
A. I grew up in Littlestown,PA. 35 miles from Hersey,PA. Best friend and his older brother invited me to go along
to see our first pro basketball game. March 2,1962. Philly/ NY Knicks. I was in the 10th grade. Dense fog set in and my friend's Mom said "NO GO"...
Wake up the next morning to hear Wilt scored 100 points.
B. I was Army but my Marine Corps friend said the Marine Birthday is Nov. 10 not March 2. He is from Texas and said
March 2 is Texas independance Day.
I'm just sayin'.

Well, I guess you got me, Loki. I admit to not verifying the date before I jumped on board. At least I wasn't the only one being mistaken. Thanks for correcting me and the others!

I, and every Marine I know cares as to when OUR birthday is. It is a day of both great celebration and solemn respect for the honored history of our Corps. Many thanks to all those who expressed their appreciation for the occasion, but, it is best saved for the official birthday of the United States Marine Corps. As Loki stated, it is and always will be November 10th, 1775...now going on 240 years of celebrations.

SEMPER FI :!:

BTW, also being a Texan, I will confirm that yesterday was the anniversary of Texas Independence Day, March 2nd, 1836.

So, the only birthday is November 10, 1775, which would lead one to think/believe there have been no celebrations since 1775.

Years ago, at halftime of a NBA game, I was watching an interview with 'Hot Rod' Hunley, former NBA player. He was a member of Wilt's team in 1962.. He remarked to the interviewer that he recalls that game as one in which he and 'Wilt the Stilt' combined for 103 points.
