Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump immigration hawk Stephen Miller are presenting legislation intended to prevent Democrats from unconstitutionally using illegal immigrants as a voting block in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility, or SAVE Act, would force voters to provide proof of citizenship in order to cast their ballots. Miller called it one of the “most important” bills to make its way through Congress in his lifetime. Republicans are accusing Democrats of deliberately skirting laws that prevent illegal immigrants from voting.

“Johnson, speaking alongside Trump world heavyweights Stephen Miller and Hogan Gidley and Rep. Chip Roy, did not give a full accounting of how many non-citizens have voted in elections, but warned the number could be ‘dangerously high,'” the Daily Mail reported.

“We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it’s not been something that is easily provable. We don’t have that number. This legislation will allow us to do exactly that,” Johnson stated.

“There is currently an unprecedented and a clear and present danger to the integrity of our election system,” Johnson remarked on Wednesday at a press conference. “And that is the threat of noncitizens and illegal aliens voting in our elections.”

The Speaker of the House emphasized with the millions of illegal immigrants that President Biden has allowed to cross the border, if just one in a hundred of them votes, that adds up to hundreds of thousands of votes and could illegally swing an election.

“Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, first teased the measure in April when he flew to former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago compound in Florida,” the Washington Times reported. “The measure and Mr. Johnson’s messaging echo the ex-president’s claims that large amounts of illegal immigrants voted in the 2020 election and are unraveling the integrity of America’s elections.”

“Non-citizens who vote in federal and state elections are already breaking the law and putting themselves at risk of jail or deportation. A small handful of municipalities in California, Maryland, and Vermont allow illegal immigrants to vote in local elections,” the Daily Mail noted.

Unfortunately, federal law currently forbids proof of citizenship being provided at federal elections. Arizona currently requires it for state elections.

“If a nefarious actor wants to intervene in our elections, all they have to do is check a box on a form and sign their name. That’s it. That’s all that’s required,” Johnson bluntly asserted.

Miller referred to the bill as the “most important vote that most members of Congress take in their entire careers.”

“If this bill does not become law then Joe Biden and Democrats will have engineered, one of the greatest interferences in any democratic nation in the history of the world,” he contended.

“The bill would aim to close any loopholes that allow people to register to vote without proof of US citizenship or photo ID, require all 50 states to remove any unlawful immigrants from their voter rolls, add penalties of up to five years in prison for election officials who register non-citizens to vote and require proof of citizenship for those who vote overseas,” the Daily Mail wrote.

Rep. Chip Roy, who co-authored the legislation, stated that if lawmakers supported the ban on noncitizen and illegal immigrant voting back in 1996 on a bipartisan basis, they should do so now.

“This is very simple,” Roy posited at the press conference. “Should only citizens vote in the United States of America in federal elections? We’re going to call the question and we’ll see where they land.”

Registering to vote requires most voters to provide proof of identity such as a driver’s license in order to cast a ballot. However, not all identification requires that a person be a U.S. citizen. The proposed bill would require documents such as a birth certificate or a passport to vote.
