What these veteran commandos experienced, what they went through to fulfill their mission to strike back at the Nazis and destroy an enemy of the human race is in the top 10 acts of moral courage. .
Everyone in the civilized world had a serious axe to grind with Hitler, but these guys felt the terrible sting of Nazi oppression and murder. The Nazi killing machine took their families, friends, associates, teachers, musicians, doctors, business men and women, clergymen, and many others. Yeah, they had an axe to grind, they were on a mission of righteous revenge.
They escaped to America and joined the US Army, and because of personal connections with people in Germany and elsewhere and their intimacy with the culture, traditions, languages, and their hatred for the Nazis, they were screened and transferred to the OSS.
(Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was the intelligence agency of the United States during World War II. The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces.)
They were trained as commandos, parachuted into Germany, and as terrifying and often painful as it was, they went to work and were, in an extraordinary but little known way, in on the kill.
