"Texas: What the Hell?" Feb 24, 2023:
FEB 24, 2023

Periodically, news bubbles up here out of Texas that has even original Texans like me scratching our heads. Thus, I’m starting this new periodic series, “Texas: What the Hell?” to keep up with the absurdity— and keep it in check.

Perhaps you think Texas is a Kingdom of Crazies, with state leaders who are too nutty, too repressive, too self-serving to be allowed out in public unsupervised by sane adults. You are wrong. Our present gaggle of far-out, right-wing officials is much goofier than that.

Meet Carrie Isaac, who won a GOP-gerrymandered state legislative seat last fall. As her priority goal in this legislative session, she has introduced a bill that would ban county officials from putting polling places on university campuses!

It’s not to keep these campus constituents from voting, she explains. No, no—it’s for their own safety. She cites the horror of mass shooters coming to a campus and murdering young voters. Unable to name even one threat of a rampage at any campus voting location, however, Isaac says her bill is a heroic effort to preempt tragedy by eliminating potential victims of what my possibly happen someday, somewhere. Fear the worst, she screeches.

Besides, says this learned Solon of voter suppression, students could still vote—universities could pay to bus students to some off-campus polling place. Yeah, Carrie, surely that would fool mass shooters.

Look out, “Texas Stupid” could soon be spreading to Florida, Wisconsin, Arizona… and your state. How about a requirement that political hucksters have to have an IQ higher than room temperature to be a lawmaker?

Students shouldn't be allowed to vote unless they're paying their own way through...
