And exactly how did the formation of the electoral college help the slaveholders? Although the north had 3 large states (MA, NY, PA) vs. only 2 in the south (VA and NC), the populations of the south contained a large number of slaves. The slave states wanted slaves to count as part of their population, thus giving them more say in the house of representatives and in the electoral college. In the end slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person, which had the effect of REDUCING the representation of slave states in the federal government.
