Does God Have Control Over the Weather?
Researched by Pastor Gary Boyd
April 1st 2023

God, being the Creator of everything (Genesis 1:1), has full control over nature and the weather (Job 26; Jeremiah 10:13; Exodus 9:29; Psalm 135:6-7; ). God gives His orders and arranges for the course and sequence of natural events (Colossians 1:16-17). He controls the rain (1 Kings 17:1; Psalm 77:16-19), the wind (Mark 4:35-41), the clouds (Job 37:11-12, 16), and the lightning (Psalm 18:14).

The prince of the power of the air
When man sinned, Satan was permitted to demonstrate his evil rule in our planet as “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2) and the “god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4). The result was the weather disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, extreme temperatures…etc.) that afflict the earth and people (Romans 5:12).

God does not afflict humans with natural disasters (James 1:13). Humans have brought this state of affairs upon themselves by their disobedience (Genesis 1:27, 31; 3:15–19; Ecclesiastes 7:29; Romans 6:23). Therefore, man is the responsible one for what happens in the world.

Satan’s control over nature is restricted by God
The story of Job is an illustration to that (Job 1:16; 18-19). God overruled Satan’s natural disasters on Job for good purposes. And Job, though tested severely, came out more than a conqueror and was blessed greatly (Romans 8:37).

Thus, even the calamities and suffering of this life that are caused by weather elements propel the believers forward. For “we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). God uses these trials to allow the human character to grow spiritually towards perfection (1 Peter 4:12, 13).

And even during the natural calamities, the believer is under God’s loving care. For God promised him protection, help and grace (Psalm 91). Dangers will not overcome the one whose confidence is in God (2 Thessalonians 3:3).

Satan will be defeated at the end
Satan cannot claim full control of the elements of earth and the weather for he is a fallen angel that was defeated by God (2 Thessalonians 2:6-11). He is sentenced to eternal damnation (Revelation 20:10). And at the end, God will restore all nature to its original perfect condition (Genesis 1:31). For He promised, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5).
