Americans voice frustrations over quick-service establishments prompting customers to tip big

If you enjoy eating out, then you could be feeling growing cultural pressures around one of the service industry’s most controversial topics: tipping.

A recent report from the Associated Press indicated silent frustrations around quick-service and to-go establishments prompting customers for generous gratuities, sometimes as high as 30%, at places they wouldn’t usually tip.

Wall Street day trader Shaun MacDonald, 27, and nursing student and trauma unit CNA Addison Reed, 25, both work busy schedules and admit to eating out more than cooking at home. They sounded off on the "frustrating" expectation to tip for drive-thru or to-go services, claiming they run into the issue "all the time."

"Especially the drive-thru places," Reed told Fox News Digital. "I know Einstein Bagels does it where they just let you go through the drive-thru, and they just turn an iPad around and expect a tip out of the drive-thru, which is frustrating."

Don't let em try to shame you into more tip money either. I recently through a seminar at a local Chop house. The bill was $4,400 dollars which included a gratuity oof 23%. Below that was the word tip. i asked the waiter why? He said it was for your server. I said we had ten servers and don't they divide up the 23%? he said yes.

Living wage leges

Living wage laws would eliminate the need for tipping, it works great in other first world countries.

I hate this cashless society. With the new cashless way:
Every time you buy a beer at the ballpark you're prompted to tip THE CASHIER!
(Just for charging you, and YOU had to go get it)
Yeah I hate it.

Quick service?...I never leave any tip, why would you? I rarely use a credit card for anything but expensive meals, and feel no sense of shame leaving the tip line with a NONE so that a tip can't be added.

I reject any establishment telling me what a tip should be, and I refuse to pay a tip based on the wine cost. It makes no sense to add $15 or $20 because you buy an expensive bottle of wine the restaurant has marked up 200% over retail.

My first wife was a waitress from Denny's breakfast shift that she made $150 a day in tips busting her butt, to high end dinner houses in the Bay Area where she made $300 a night for easier work. Her attitude was that a $20 tip for dinner was just fine, even though there were a lot of people that left her way more. My point being she did not cop any attitude towards a $20 tip on a dinner that was well over a hundred dollars. Now the attitude seems to be 30% is not out of line.

And a last thing, crappy service with an attitude...no tip, zero, why would you? A tip is optional and is about rewarding excellent service, not a mandatory thing that poor waiters are required to get. And I do that directly, telling both the waiter and the manager that I left no tip because the service was crappy.

Except one problem. Who decides what a living wage is?

In fact, a local high end restaurant tried that idea. Their servers raised hades. In fact, they said their income would decline.

As usual you bought into the narrative!

Refuse to be cashless!! On Monday, I draw a set amount of cash for the week. I am avoiding credit/debt card usage in a very rebellious fashion.

For an unexpected change, you are behaving as a rational human as opposed to a pile of ectoplasm.

Weird story from the E group. We decided to have Saturday lunch at Golden Corral. They do awesome chicken livers. For those who do not know, the only service provided is beverage service and extra plates. Our server received a 20% tip. Why? Because she made sure our beverage glasses were full, checked to make sure everything was okay several times. In every single interaction, she was smiling, polite and conveyed true concern that all was well at our table. We observed her interaction with other tables. She was always the same.

You provide me with good service you will be rewarded. In fact, this past Christmas we handed out gift cash envelopes to the three wait staff we consistently have at our local venue. All three are most excellent wait staff. I do not even have to tell them my to go order for Wednesday. They all know it by heart.
