Voting for Speaker of the House

So, as I write this, the House is voting for Nancy Pelosi's replacement. A couple of things kind of puzzle me. I wonder if anyone here can explain...

1. Why is a Democrat on the ballot? I thought if the Republicans have a majority (as thin as it is) there would only be Republicans in contention.

2. Why is McCarthy allowed to repeatedly ask for a redo every time the Democrat (Jefferies) wins? They just voted for a second time and McCarthy lost again... Now they're all going vote a third time.

I'll figure it out, but if anyone can save me the effort, that would be great.

Anyone can be voted on for Speaker, even someone who is not a member of Congress. Second, it takes a majority of House membership to win or 218 votes, not a majority of votes cast.

OK, so I figured out the answer to my second question... The winner isn't just the one with the most votes... Democrat Jefferies got that in both ballots so far... The winner is the one with the majority vote, which in this case would be 218 and none of the nominated members got that yet. Even though Jefferies got the most votes so far, it was still short of 218.

This shouldn't be so hard for the Republicans who currently enjoy a 222 seat majority. But there is apparently some division among Republicans and they can't decide who to rally behind. I don't think Jefferies should be the speaker, the Republicans won the House, so the speaker should be a Republican. So can they please, get their shit together and choose one because the House can't get down to business without taking care of this first.

Ugh... the third ballot is in progress and Jordan already has 9 votes to McCarthy's 65. Jefferies is at 67. You can see that everyone in the chamber already knows the Republican votes are too divided and they'll have to go to a fourth.

Anyone can be nominated. Democrats nominate democrats. Republicans nominate republicans. Takes over 50% to win. They will keep revoting until one nominee has 218 votes.
