US Braced For "Bomb Cyclone", Thousands Of Flights Cancelled, Highways Shut.

UPDATE: Heavy rain, sleet, snow, winds as strong as 50 mph to lash states, posing power outage threat

Forecasters have predicted an onslaught of heavy snow, ice, flooding and powerful winds from Thursday to Saturday in a broad swath of the country, from the Plains and Midwest to the East Coast. A surge of Arctic air will follow. The Christmas weekend could be the coldest in decades.

The National Weather Service said Wednesday the storm was so large and encompassing that around 190 million people are currently under some type of winter weather advisory.

Governors in at least 12 states have declared emergency measures and other cold weather efforts in response to the storm and its hazardous conditions.

Colorado: On Tuesday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis activated over 100 state National Guard members to help assist with "extreme cold weather operations" across the state, according to a news release.

Connecticut: Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state's severe cold weather protocol in response to potential below-zero wind chills for Friday to Monday, according to a news release. Lamont also activated the state's emergency operations center in anticipation of the rain storm over the holiday weekend.

Georgia: On Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency and warned the public to prepare for freezing weather, according to a news release.

Kentucky: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency Wednesday ahead of the arctic front that was forecast to bring a flash freeze and extremely cold temperatures across the state, according to a news release.

Maryland: Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced Wednesday that the state activated its emergency response operations in preparation of the winter storm, according to a news release.

Missouri: Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed an executive order Tuesday to activate the state's emergency operations plan against the extreme cold. According to a news release, the declaration will “ensure state resources are available and National Guard members are on standby for any needed response efforts across the state."

North Carolina: North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signed a state of emergency Tuesday to activate the state’s emergency operations. “We know that with the extremely low temperatures North Carolinians will need propane and other heating fuel to keep their families warm," Cooper said in a statement.

New York: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Thursday ahead of the winter storm. "Heavy rain and snow, strong winds, coastal and lakeshore flooding and flash freezing are all possible in various regions across the state throughout the holiday weekend," a news release from Hochul's office states.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt declared a state of emergency Wednesday for all 77 counties ahead of the storm which temporarily suspends requirements for size and weights permits of oversized vehicles transporting materials and supplies used for emergency relief and power restoration, according to a news release.

West Virginia: West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of preparedness for all 55 counties in the state and declared Friday as a full-holiday for public employees ahead of the storm, according to a news release.

Wisconsin: Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers signed an executive order declaring an energy emergency in the state due to weather. "Due to the below-average temperatures, accumulating and blowing snow throughout the state, deliveries of liquid fuels for home heating shipped by truck, barge, and particularly rail, are limited," a news release from Evers' office states.

I live in Idaho, we just went thru 4 days of bitter cold temps ranging from -7 to -14 with a wind chill of -20 below. The wind was 30 miles per hour. Our power went out for 3 hours and room temp fell from 70 to 55 thank God they got it fixed. Remember to always have several lights on hand that don't require electricity. Pray for those that are going thru this especially the elderly shut ins and check on them frequently.

I remember. Christmas 40 years ago. I was in upstate NY and it was below O°. I hadn't cheacked my antifreeze and was going outside to start my vehicle and letting it warm up ever other hour or so because I didn't want my engine bloc to freeze. One of my neighbors was in the Army on leave doing the same thing.

I'm in the Texas Panhandle, and it hit early yesterday morning. When I left for work at 5am, it was -1with wind chill of -31.
Don't leave your dogs outside without good shelter, and appreciate your mail carrier. We work in this, and it's brutal.

I rejoice with you that you had no long-term power outage. God is good.

There's nothing worse, IMHO, than prolonged cold temperatures inside the home... no place to run to, no place to hide from all encompassing cold.

In my youth, the only thing that discouraged me from the dream of homesteading in Alaska was the thought of -20 to -30 degree temperatures, and 24 hour darkness (no sunshine) six months of every year.

I certainly hope you have goose down lined hooded parkas, ski gloves, and goose down quilted long underwear, Archie.

Indiana rarely experiences minus zero weather before January, and then intermittently, and just for a few days. This storm is one of those "rarelys."

In scanning the headlines of climate websites early this morning, I noticed a few of what I would call the "disclaimer" headlines of true believers...i.e., "This is actually being caused by 'Climate Change.'"

They can't let go of it for a minute.

But then, after bilking the nation's citizens of billions of dollars by falsely claiming it will enable them to reverse our weather trends, - if they have to 'fess up now, they should rightly fear being lynched.

I drove across hundreds of miles of South Dakota to gaze upon Mount Rushmore several decades ago, and your great plains or prairie areas did seem to be the type of terrain that would be conducive to strong winds, Gatsby.

I am told we've been having 40 mph wind gusts yesterday and today, but with no noise accompanying it (as a thunderstorm would have) had no hint of it inside.

The terrain here is both hilly and wooded, which normally tends to break up strong winds.

I had a van too tall to fit under the top door frame of my 1940s garage about that time, peg, in the 1980s, and put a heavy tarp over the vehicle every night, with a cement block holding down each corner of the tarp. It helped some with the temperature by keeping wind out, but more with keeping snow and ice off, to avoid scraping.
