And these are the same school teachers and administrators who whine and say they are underpaid.

How would you react if some little kid, at a school near you, were to make the sign for "hunter" at another child, or at you?

Why can't his parents teach him how to say Spanjer in sign?

No reaction would be necessary.

Why did you react to the article? No reaction is necessary. The article is from August of 2012.

As this was article was originally dated August of 2012, I do not understand its relevance considering this:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/deaf-preschooler-hunter-spanjer-wins-sign-name-school-162348178.html

Sometimes the Court of Public Opinion will win out on the correct side.
Unfortunately, Common Sense is still being beaten down by Political Correctness. Help us figure out a strategy to defeat PC. I WOULD say just shoot all proclaimed Progressives, Liberals, Socialists, Marxists, etc, etc, etc. You know the bad buys. But that would play right into the hands of the portrayal of libertarians and conservatives as being gun-toting nuts.

 I know, let's all go out and buy Nerf Guns and Nerf ammo them to death!!!

Oh, no, that brings up an even scarier thought: When are they going to ban Nerf guns? My cats hates it when I shoot him with those darts, but loves to eat them.

Inasmuch as I had been up all night, I failed to notice the date of the article. My response still stands!

You do understand that perhaps your cat should not ingest Nerf darts! What the hades are you thinking?

If the schools would not react with such hysteria at the mere thought of a gun, there would be no reaction. You do realize kids have been playing some type of gun game for decade upon decade upon decade?

Why should they have to change how their child communicates? Unless I missed the government issuing another edict, parents still are the decision makers concerning their children. I know the government would have it otherwise; however, it has not yet come to that dismal point.

The school didn't react with hysteria, a verbal suggestion was made by an unidentified employee of the preschool. And Brian Spanjer posted it on his Facebook page.

And the court of public opinion erupted in hysterics.

I think the suggestion has some merit. But it wasn't a vicious or hysterical attempt to change the way Hunter indicates his name in sign.

That a suggestion made out of real or imagined concern should be thrown about as a school attempting to force a PC stance is really stretching the issue.

(Sarc.) This is a cover for forcing Nebraska to accept Common Core standards. If the GIPS were under Common Core, this would never have happened.(/Sarc.)

The reaction, suggesting the kid change the way he signs his name while everyone else in the ASL signing community recognizes it as the sign of his name, was ridiculous in the fact that it was made because it looked like he was brandishing a finger gun. The liberals are out of hand and we need to put a stop to political correctness immediately. If someone is an asshole, I believe I should be able to call them an asshole by my Constitutionally granted First Amendment rights. Calling someone black because their skin is black or dark brown is the same as someone calling a white person white. There is no racism involved, only a color description. I refuse to call someone an African American and with good reason. I am not allowed to call myself a European American without being considered racist. Africa is a continent consisting of many countries, as is Europe; why is one allowed but the other not?

When the liberals cry out in outrage it is okay, but it is NOT okay for the other side of the coin to get loud and have a desire to be heard. The left is more known for hysterics when disagreement occurs.

So any name that is found offensive should be forced to change? Should we know longer call Richards Dick for short because it can be considered pornographic and therefore offensive, or because it euphemistically is used as a term to indicate a penis. GET REAL!!!

How is it not?

I have now reread the article and your link. You would think I would have nothing left to say. Alas you would be incorrect.

Why in the name of Gehenna would any responsible, loving parent commit such a cretinous act as to place a three year in a public school?

I think naming this curriculum "Common Core" is applicable when you consider the various synonyms for the word "common" such as; déclassé, shoddy, trite, banal, shoddy, vulgar, undistinguished. Shall I go on?

It was pointed out, (correctly), that this incident occurred in August of 2012. I should get out more; I didn't realize that bureaucratic stupidity came with an expiration date these days. This is not so much political correctness, as apparatchiks who have too much time on their hands, and too tenuous a grasp of reality. Any attempt to insulate children from any suggestion of violence is an exercise in futility. Will you also prevent them from reading, watching TV, or playing sports? What happens when these children are exposed to the real world, where violence is a fact of life, there are real winners and real losers, and "P" for "Participant" is not usually an acceptable alternative?

Its much cheaper than daycare, would be my guess.
