Weather Eye

Possibly the most powerful lightning bolt ever recorded happened in Oklahoma in 2018, but instead of the lightening shooting downwards, this one shot up towards the edge of space.

This was a phenomenon, called a gigantic blue jet, a rare and intense burst of lightening that shoots out of the top of thunderclouds in a narrow, blue-coloured cone with the energy about 100 times greater than a typical lightening strike.

The Oklahoma jet soared up from a towering cloud top, some 15 miles tall, and shot up to 50 miles in altitude, reaching the lower part of the ionosphere. This astonishing sight was photographed by an amateur weather enthusiast, Kevin Palivec, and caught the attention of researchers. By a stroke of luck, they found that the blue jet was also reordered by weather radar, satellites and a high-frequency lightening mapping system. Putting all this information together built up a 3D piture of the blue jet that lived up to its name, carrying 300 coulombs of electrical charge and reaching temperatures of about 4,500C.

Blue jets are elusive, last only a fraction of a second, and are difficult to study. They happen during intense thunderstorms and often seem to come during strong hail activity, for some reasons that are not known. But these strange sights have occasionally been seen in history. “Continuous darts of light...ascended to a considerable altitude, resembling rockets more than lightening,” described an eye witness in 1886. It wasn’t until 1993 that scientist flying in an aircraft above severe thunderstorms in Arkansas were astonished to see cones of blue light firing up from the cloud tops at speeds of more than 224,000mph.

Oklahoma is something of a Mecca for gigantic blue jets and other sorts of weired lightening phenomena that shoot out from the top of thunderclouds. This is an area well known for powerful tornados spawned by extremely powerful thunderstorms, some of which can generate upward-directed lightening.
