Man Jailed for Spending 100K RMB to Buy a Foreign Wife

A man in Huangshi city, Hubei province, has been put under administrative detention for "illegally hosting" a foreigner, whom he claims is his wife. Following the incident, the said wife was also deported back to her home country.

All Was Good and Well Until March 16th This Year

On the evening of March 16, a man surnamed Hu went to a Huangshi PSB branch to submit documents so that he can apply for his child's household registration.

The person in charge of handling household registrations, Cai Wenqi, found that submitted documents were not sufficient because they lacked marriage certificate and the child's mother information, so he declined to accept the household registration application documents for this child.

"So, you are not married and you can't even tell us the name of the mother or who the mother of the child is? Where and how did you get this child?" He asked Hu at the time.

How?

Hu is almost 30 years old, but he couldn't get a spouse to marry due to his financial condition. He has earned a title of the veritable "old leftover man" among his close friends and relatives.

At his age, he is facing a lot of pressure to find a wife, alas, him and his family are too poor to afford one.

Over the years, he had tried all means to find a wife to no avail and he became a laughstock of his community, relatives, and family.

Luckily, in October 2019, he met a "transborders matchmaker" man, whom with a little fee of 100K, introduced Hu to a foreign woman named "Furong" (pseudonym) who agreed to be his wife.

Hu's family and relatives were very satisfied with "Furong", she joined the family and on September 6, 2020, gave birth to a daughter.

But as the whole story seemed to play right on Hu's side, he always knew that his relationship with "Furong" was illegal. For one, they were not married and that means his child would not get a household registration, and that is with not even mentioning getting a citizen's ID card.

Concerned about his child's future, Hu decided to go to the registration office by himself and register the child, all while hiding information about his "wife". He thought that staff at the registration department would not ask about the mother.

The Wife

Furong, pseudonym, is a 20-year-old woman from Cambodia, she was smuggled into China in October 2019 by a gang that helps foreign citizens cross-borders illegally into China.

After crossing the border, she was acquainted with a man surnamed Qi who sold her to another man surnamed Hu at the price of 100,000 yuan.

Investigation

Normally, one would not be so secretive about their wife/partner's information when registering their children, so Hu's behavior attracted the attention of the authority.

The police organized several units to investigate the case and later found that Hu was actually hosting a foreign citizen who had crossed borders illegally.

Detention and Deportation

After completing the investigation on the couple, on December 17, Hu was put under administrative detention and given a fine for hosting an illegal immigrant.

Qi and his cahoots of cross-border people smugglers have also been arrested by the Yangxin County police, their case is still under investigation.

Furong has been deported to Cambodia and would not be allowed to enter China for the next five years from the date of deportation.

Such a strange approach to matrimony.

We homed in on the same thing

I'm going to make an assumption (based on experience) that the kid is here in China with the grandparents...

It's doubtful that Cambodia would recognize her as a citizen, and being born here (with a Chinese parent) gives the child citizenship...

Unfortunately, as the parents were not legally married, the child is in a grey zone... It will be difficult for the grandparents to attain full rights as a legitimate citizen for her...

This law applies to children with two Chinese parents as well... Marriage is taken seriously, and only legitimate children are afforded full rights...

Her father being a criminal won't help things either...

Although I find the approach to be totally wrong when mandated by government, many in the USA would benefit from taking marriage and child bearing a bit more seriously.

30 million + unmarried men in China... With that number increasing yearly...

Lots of single children are finding it difficult to secure wives...

Not saying he did it the right way..Just saying I understand where he's coming from...

And lots of women from South East Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, the is and nations, even India and Pakistan) see marrying Chinese as a way to a better life..

Immigration policies make it easy for wealthy men to import wives... But almost impossible for lower class men...
