'Not a Snowball's Chance In Hell': Former Head of Marine Corps Slams Obama's ISIS Strategy

At a conference in D.C. on Friday, General James Conway (the 34th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps) slammed Obama’s ISIS strategy with a potent dose of reality.

The Daily Caller reported on what Conway had to say:

“I don’t think the president’s plan has a snowball’s chance in hell of succeeding,” retired Marine General James Conway, who served as the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps during the end of the Bush administration and the beginning of the Obama administration, said at the Maverick PAC Conference in Washington, D.C. Friday, according to a source in attendance.

The source said Conway’s major concern was that the U.S. did not have a force on the ground in Syria it could rely on, like the Kurdish Peshmerga in Iraq. Though the Obama administration believes it can support what it says are moderate rebel forces in Syria to aid in the fight against ISIS, many critics warn that there may be no truly moderate force in the country of any significant strength.

The retired four-star general has lit into the White House in the past. In June, Conway blasted the exchange of five terrorism suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay for the suspected deserter and Taliban captive Bowe Bergdahl.

The FSA (Free Syria Army) is composed of many soldiers who used to be loyal to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and others who have collaborated with al Qaeda through the Nusra Front. In addition, Steven Sotloff’s family claimed that moderate rebels sold their son to ISIS.

The former Marine commandant Conway isn’t the only leading military or intelligence figure to come out against Obama’s ISIS tactics.

When Obama revealed to the world that “he didn’t have a strategy yet,” U.S. Army General Jack Keane said it was an “an extraordinary and stunning admission coming from the leader of the world’s most powerful nation.” Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell bluntly told CBS that defeating ISIS leadership would come either by “capturing or killing them.”

With the news that 40 Americans who fought for ISIS have returned to the U.S., and more Americans are still being held hostage by the Islamic State, perhaps the President should consider advice from leaders who have shaped United States foreign policy in the past. It couldn’t hurt, right?

Many of these retired generals are paid shills for companies like General Dynamics and Blackwater. They have skin in the game.

Notice how when the Saudis lop off heads, finance terrorists, and have a "no Jews or Christians" policy as to who can live in or visit their country (except for business men and petroleum engineers), all you ever hear from these retired lifers is "crickets".

The big picture is being glossed over. Obama's policy is designed to fail. No other explanation. He may be stupid, but he knows his Generals and intel people are not. When any POTUS gets 100% disagreement from th ed experts, he knows his policy will fail.

Brian-as a rule retired generals, much like most retired presidents, do not speak out against those currently in power unless they feel the security of the citizens of this country is at risk. The reason they are speaking out is that this president's strategy to combat ISIS is totally flawed and does not make any sense what-so-ever. These men live and have family in this country and they would be remiss if they did not speak out. To see the security of our country entrusted to man with military strategic ability comparable to that of a Cub Scout is more than they can stomach. I applaud them for speaking out against an agenda that will allow ISIS to multiply while we are arming and training a group of Syrians who may well throw down their arms and run when faced with overwhelming odds. This is stupidity at the highest level of government. We have been training Iraqis for a few years now and 30,000 of them were decimated by 3,000 ISIS fighters so what will 5,000 rebels do against 45,000 ISIS ? The time to strike with overwhelming force is now and the only force that can lead assault is that of the USA. So no US boots on the ground spells DEFEAT. Politics did not allow us to win in Korea and in Vietnam and we are about to repeat the same mistakes. Wake up folks. We fight them in their territory or in our cities and towns. Which do you prefer ? We learned last night that 10 ISIS are already here in the Boston area. Good Luck America !!!

LBJ and McNamara pushed the same fishbait in the 1960s....If we don't fight the "commies" in Vietnam, we will be fighting them in America".

Well, the N. Vietnamese won and they never launched ships for Honolulu and San Francisco.

What the Gulf of Tonkin resolution did do was to stampede gullible Americans into being being run off a financial cliff and to turn their children over to the military industrial establishment.

The only winners in this "Chicken Little-the sky is falling game" are folks like Cheney, Halliburton, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Blackwater, and of course the manufacturers of prosthetic arms and legs, and of course......coffins..

You want to be suckered again? Go volunteer yourself to go into Baghdad and not your neighbors children.

No, it's just that retired and former means, they are no longer in the loop, so don't get intelligence reports anymore. Some of them just can't let go and BE retired or former. They crave having people hang on their every word, just like they did when they were in.

Humans will be humans, whether they're retired, former or otherwise. We all crave the limelight and these "has beens " are getting it however they can.

LOL. So active duty can be ordered mute or considered disloyal, and those retired are all suspect?

IOW - Obama, the least qualified man in the room, and the archetect of giving Iraq to ISIS, is the only person whose opinion matters to you?

You are a text book case of a closed mind.

I think President Truman pretty much had the last word on presidential vs. military opinions. When he cashiered General MacCarthur, I think a lot of the military received his message. There was nothing subtle about it.

President Obama was elected by the majority of the American voters. These retired lifers were elected by nobody. Just because some of them are shills for the defense contracting companies, doesn't mean the rest of us have to pay them any mind.

No, he doesn't have to listen to people that know something about anything.

Ignorance can be cured with ecucation from those that know more.

But you can't fix stupid, because stupid won't listen.

Well we have not had a terriorest attack in this country since 9/11 and I wonder who that president was. Was he Black or white. Was he a Muslim or a Christian was he born in the USA. And most of all did he got warned and choose to go read my pet goat. Let me give you some more hints. Now this president spent $3.7 trillion on these wars and denied funding the VA to take care of these guys. He left the cost to the next president so it did not get on his deficit. Now with the $3.7 trillion added to the deficit (unpaid for)he gave the wealthy a tax break which was unfunded. Then he passed Medicare part D for $500 million unpaid for. He left the country in Damm close to a depression. So if I am a lefty that got sucked I am Damm proud of it than having a rightie president that Damm near out this country into a depression. Now if you rightie can come up with the answer I will send you a signed copy of My Pet Goat.

The Pet Goat book that fetches the most, is the one GW colored that day. Have you ever seen the footage of the commander in chief that day? He was either totally out of it or else lying. Even my dog knows what those kind of darting shifty eyes mean.

GW was never the skilled professional liar his predecessor was. Clinton could maintain full eye contact with no eye shifting......the consummate car salesman---bullsh*t artist.
